Conger Collection

Melva and Mr. Dickie on Melva's birthday in January 2008.

Self-mastery and self-discipline are the foundation of good relationships with others. (Daily Reflections For Highly Effective People, 13 Jun)

Say you are well, and all is well with you and God will hear your words and make them true. (James Russell Lowe in Family Feelings by Vanceburg and Silverman, 18 Jan)

Today I finished a project to consolidate various articles about members of the Conger family into one PDF document that I posted on my genealogy website. Friend, Robert Guilinger, and I gathered these articles during the years when we were working on Conger genealogy together. I titled the collection, A Collection of Documents About Members of The Conger Family. I posted to my Henthorn Website News blog to let folks know that this new 53-page document is now available. The Internet is a great tool for anyone interested in cheap or free ways to publish genealogy and family history information.

Mr. Dickie's Boston Fern

Photo: Mr. Dickie

When I count on others for security, approval and prestige, I'm expecting too much of them and too little of myself. (A Time to Be Free, 22 May)

I'm competent in carrying out the duties of my life, even though at times it appears that I have a learning disability. (Mr. Dickie after, Meditations For Parents Who Do Too Much, by Jonathon and Wendy Lazear, 31 May)

The diningroom of my Grandmother, Augusta Carlson, had a bay window on the south side. For many years there was a beautiful Boston fern growing in front of the window. I remember how much I admired that fern each time we went to grandmother's house for a visit. The fern grew in that window until the house was sold. Aunt Ethel Swanson took the fern to her farm house near Colon, NE where she grew it near one of the south windows in her house.

Melva and I have several Boston ferns growing in our house. There are two ferns in this picture growing in front of the large livingroom window on the west side of our house.

Yesterday I learned more about the Google Picasa photo program. I downloaded the program and installed it on my laptop computer. After I started the program I found the button for the BlogThis! feature which allowed me to more quickly upload photos to this blog. I also was able to get the program to make a short movie that played with the RealPlayer. Late in the day I got the program to read my thumb drive looking for more photos. Many tiny thumbnail photos were produced on the screen. When I clicked on those I could view the image in a larger size. I think the program is going to be very handy.

Melva's Block Quilt

This is a picture of Melva's Block Quilt taken near the flower garden along the back fence in our yard.

In a moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing to do. The worst thing you can do is nothing. (Theodore Roosevelt, in Acts of Faith, 15 April)

We know by know that our reactions to the events in our lives can cause us more grief than the events themselves. (A Time to Be Free, 30 May)

Mr. Dickie in Annapolis, MD

I'm still seeking a better method to post photographs to my Google Blog.

I downloaded the Google Picasa photo program to my laptop computer. That process took about twenty-five minutes because of my phone line link to the Internet. Once the program arrived at my computer I installed it. That took a few more minutes. Then I let Picasa create a catalog of all of the photos on the computer. It didn't read the thumb drive, just the photos on my hard drive. That's all right. I can copy the photos from the thumb drive to the hard drive later if I want to.

Next I used the "BlogThis!" button of Picasa to select this photograph for uploading to my blog. Some of the photos I have aren't the best quality because the camera I was using wasn't of high quality. This photo falls into that category.

The final test of the "BlogThis!" function was when I finished typing this entry and clicked "Publish Post."

Success! The process worked. The photograph was quickly uploaded from the computer to my blog.

In the days ahead I'll want to spend more time learning more about everything I can do with the Picasa program. If I learned something useful I'll write more about it in this blog.

Something to Think About

  • Every day is a blessing to behold. (Iyanla Vanzant, Acts of Faith, 17 May)
  • [We need] Time away from noise and demands and interruptions, from the tyranny of things undone. (Mary H. Frakes, MindWalks, p. 202)
  • Our greatest problems in life come not so much from the situations we confront as from our doubts about our ability to handle them. (Susan Tyalor in Acts of Faith, 7 Apr)

It's Too Hot For Comfort!

Photo: Corel

  • I have much more to be grateful for than I realize. Too often I don't remember to give thought to all the things in my life that I could enjoy and appreciate. (One Day at a Time in Al-Anon, 5 May)

Summer is here with a vengeance. Here in Washington, DC you can fry an egg on your car hood or your bald head.

For the last week I have been going to two of the AOL genealogy chatrooms in the evening. Both rooms have about one dozen visitors at a time. In the "Special Interests" room I have been reading profiles whenever anyone has taken time to create one. Many folks are so worried about the Internet they won't consider having a profile.

I believe it's a good idea to upload photographs that I want to use in my blogs ahead of time. This seems to work best. When I try to load a photo while I'm typing this kind of blog entry I often can't get it to work. There is one drawback that I am not comfortable with yet. The file names of the stored photos are very long and the process of acquiring the file name via copy and paste is somewhat tedious. There's probably something I don't understand. There often is.

I had an appointment this morning with my dermatologist. I got a clean bill of health. He told me to stay out of the sun and wear SPF 70 sunscreen when I have to be outside. He also told me to come back in a year because he could see sun damage that ought to be monitored at my age.

Ruth Henthorn's BowTie Quilt

Whatever comes we must prepare to face it. There
are no guarantees.
(Jonathon and Wendy Lazear, Meditations for Parents
Who Do Too Much, 24 Apr)

This is a BowTie quilt made by my mother, Ruth Henthorn. We took the quilt outside to display on a quilt rack.

The photo was uploaded to Google Picasa and then I was able to figure out a way to cut the URL for the photo from one of the Picasa pages. I don't think the way I got the photo into this blog entry was the way to do it. It will have to do for the moment because I can't understand how to do it in an easier way.

There's something called, Blog This! which I think I should use. I don't understand how it works yet.
