Free Lunch

All over the country, people are suffering the consequences of desiring rewards without investment. Many bought houses and cars they couldn't afford; and because finance companies were willing to fund those bad loans, they ignored good judgment and only saw the rewards they could have with little to no sacrifice.  Those rewards they thought they could have so easily are in jeopardy or gone completely; and the reality that we can't have something for nothing is here to stay.

Recess

People do many bad things for selfish reasons: they do worse things for their families.

But they do the worst in the name of patriotism, and they are made proud by these crimes:

  • spying,
  • unduly heavy tax collecting,
  • sacrificing lives, and
  • waging wars.

Flag Day - 14 June 2012

The men and women of our armed forces, who've made so many personal sacrifices to serve our country, should only be asked to risk their lives for an absolutely necessary cause, not seductive delusion. (Jane Velez-Mitchell, Addict Nation, p. 253) 14 June 2012

Remembering Fallen Comrades

On July 4, 2008 I posted a piece remembering two of my fallen Army comrades on my Obituary blog.  It's fitting on this Memorial Day weekend to once again pay tribute to their military service and sacrifice.

Employment

Let every man be occupied in the highest employment of which he is capable and die conscious that he has done his best. (Sidney Smith in Keepers Of The Wisdom by Karen Casey, 28 January)

You could drop dead the moment after you've finished sacrificing your entire life for your retirement. (Dr. Wayne W. Dyer, Pulling Your Own Strings, p. 179)

Many people are fooled in the end who at the beginning seemed led by a good inspiration. (Thomas 'A Kempis, The Imitation Of Christ, Book 3, Chapter 15, p. 102)

Trials Ahead

If we fail to perfect and enlarge our spiritual life through work and self-sacrifice for others, we cannot survive the certain trials and low spots ahead. (After, As Bill Sees It, p. 188)
