Clearing Your House of Clutter

Do not do anything that you can persuade someone else to do. Take the time to train others to organize your things the way you like them, even if it means allowing a few minor slip-ups to happen while they get up to speed. If you can afford it hire extra help.

Always ask yourself, whenever you buy a new piece of clothing, appliance, or other type of thing how much time this purchase will take to maintain.

Making Peace With Things

If you want to make peace with the things in your life, you must first understand and make peace with yourself. There is no other way.

Things

Things are brought in, either by you or by someone else. If you're an adult, you have a legal right to choose what things you bring or allow into your space. Not all of us, however choose to exercise this right.

Be Done With It

Library of Congress Model
U.S. Botanical Gardens
December 2014

Several times a day, sit down and plan your actions for the next few hours. Ask yourself what impulse triggers may lie in your path and visualize yourself walking by them, nodding and smiling and saying, "No thank you."
(Cindy Glovinsky, Making Peace With The Things In Your Life, p. 158)

Finish every day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can.
(Ralph Waldo Emerson in Night Light by Amy E. Dean, 17 April)

To finish the moment, to find the journey's end in every step of the road, to live the greatest number of good hours, is wisdom.

Things

Things

Things are about power.
Things are about belonging.
Things are about identity
Things are about perfection.

Planning

Planning is not supposed to be a onetime marathon but an ongoing process that you do every day. Ongoing planning is essential. ... Nothing else will happen if you don't do this.

Get It While You Can

For some people, buying certain things has become a little too easy, resulting in debts and/or clutter. This is not just a problem of the affluent, as even the impoverished may go overboard at yard sales and thrift shops.
(Cindy Glovinsky, Making Peace With The Things In Your Life, p. 26-27)

Giving yourself ... permission to try out new experiences, to take risks and, most importantly, to do the things which you feel are significant, regardless of how others view them, will give you more and more meaning in your everyday life.

There's Work To Be Done

There is a great deal to be done. At present, overproduction and over-consumption of nonessential Things, especially in the West, is leading to the destruction of the world's resources and habitats. Meanwhile, both between and within cultures, enormous material inequalities exist, resulting in conflicts in [and between] many countries. If we are to begin to change the Thing habits that have created these problems, we must first change our attitudes about Things, especially about the ownership of excess Things.

Treasures

When you cut down the number of treasures you try to hang on to, you may find that each treasure you keep grows brighter and more beautiful every day.
(Cindy Glovinsky, Making Peace With The Things In Your Life, p. 80)

Physical, financial, and emotional challenges are real. They create boundaries in our lives. However, no one said we cannot move beyond boundaries. Your life is a reflection of what you believe.

My Things

... one thing is certain: the people who get the most fun out of their belongings are not necessarily the people with the most Things.

Favorite Things

Putting off getting rid of things because your haven't found the right person or organization to which to give them can hold you in bondage for years.

Family Heirlooms

Are you keeping a lot of family heirlooms in order to pass them on to your descendants? How do you and your potential heirs feel about these things?

Clutter

... one of the most common escapes from dealing with clutter is obsessive analysis of the problem itself. While you must figure out what's going to make progress with things, when you make analysis an end in itself, substituting thought for action, it becomes self-defeating.
