What Makes You Happy

Latest Hibiscus, before planting - Photo by Melva

When we expect other people and material things to make us happy, we will always be disappointed.
(Perry Tilleraas, The Color Of Light, 7 February)

Today Melva and I attended the annual Labor Day event at the Catholic Church near the Hilltop Shopping Center in Bowie.  I looked for books and CDs at the book sale table.  Afterwards we went to the Bake Sale and Bingo in the church basement.  Our friends, Gary and Blandina Snellings and their daughter, Rosanna were in the basement when we arrived.  That was a nice surprise.  Melva played some Bingo and I watched the people.  We had a nice time even though it was very hot while we were outside at the book sale.

You've Got To Be Kidding Me

Do not be afraid of the way your intellect calls into question old stories and legends. The pure intellect cannot destroy anything without replacing it with the truth: this is one of its essential qualities. (Leo Tolstoy, A Calendar Of Wisdom, 5 December) 18 January 2013

Yesterday former Library of Congress colleague Dave Naylor and I went to lunch in Bowie, MD and then attended the Bowie Seniors Computer Club (BSCC) meeting where the guest speaker was Stephen Deming of Microsoft.  Mr. Deming talked to the club twice before so I knew what to expect.  He is very knowledgeable and creates a good bond with his audience.  He discussed and demonstrated, Windows 8, the Surface tablet and the latest version of MS Office.

Overpopulation

Overpopulation is the underlying problem and common thread that runs through all of the other social problems, like malnutrition and disease. (Jane Velez-Mitchell, Addict Nation, p. 196)

I've been working on a project to learn more about the Yahoo photo storage application - Flickr.  I've created photo "sets" for two of my recent photo shoots.  I think reader might like how easy it is for me to share links to the photos using Flickr.

On 9 June 2012 while we were in Norfolk, VA for the weekend we attended OpSail 2012.  I had a great time taking photos of the tail ships.

Melva's quilting class, Sharing The Love Quilters, which meets at the Bowie Senior Center in Bowie, MD  mounted a quilt show at the center which officially started on 15 June 2012.  I went to the center a day early to take photos of the exhibit.

Serious Times

Whatever you do takes time, and yet it is always now. (Eckhart Tolle, A New Earth, p. 266)

In any realm of life success depends on obedience to the word of the expert.  (William Barclay, The Letter to the Hebrews, p. 34)

No Man Need Stay The Way He Is, (Title of a Fosdick sermon in The Letters To Timothy by William Barclay, p. 251)

Each of us must make our way through these serious times, carefully ordering our priorities and doing what we need to do to safeguard our spiritual growth.  (Casey and Vanceburg, The Promise Of A New Day, 6 August)

Yesterday I spent the afternoon in Bowie, MD.  I attended the computer club meeting at the Senior Center.  I assisted with setting up and breaking down the room.  Florence brought her desktop computer running Windows XP. We connected the computer to the projector.  She needed some help with with the use of her floppy and CD drives.  The computer was quite slow even when it was hard wired to the Internet.  After the meeting Bob B. made several changes in an attempt to eliminate the problems.

After the club meeting I went to the libraries in Bowie and Crofton to return books and CDs.  I checked out ten more CDs from Crofton.  I selected several CDs by country artists who are new to me.

This is my second day using the new Blogger editor.  I like it so far.  The Label entry works better and the formatting commands are better.  The Preview displays how the page will actually look.  Overall I give them a "thumbs up."

Bowie Senior Center Computer Classroom Open House

Click on the photo to go to Google Picasa to view a nine-photo slideshow.

This morning there was an Open House at the Bowie Senior Center to dedicate the new computers in the computer classroom. I attended the event, took photos and created a Picasa photo album when I got home. There's a link to the photo album on the Training Page of the website of the Bowie Seniors Computer Club. I'm posting this information to Mr. Dickie's blog to test that an album can be shared in this way and to show off what I accomplished.

Holiday Season

In the holidays ahead, I will continue to do the things that have been special . I will abandon any pattern that gives me no joy. (Sefra Kobrin Pitzele, One More Day, 17 December)

Today Melva and I are going to attend the Christmas luncheon of the Bowie Seniors Computer Club in Laurel.

There was an interesting story on page one of The Washington Post this morning about how a young woman used Facebook to locate two people who found her on a doorstep as an abandoned baby many years ago.

How Does That Work?

Meditation is the daily minimum requirement that will prevent us from breaking down and falling apart - at the most inopportune moments. (Iyanla Vanzant, Faith in the Valley, p. 265)

Knowledge is simply information gathered; knowing how to use knowledge for the sake of health, community, and happiness is wisdom. (Craig Gallaway in The Upper Room Disciplines -2006, 12 September)

I will let others know I value them, and why. (Sefra Kobrin Pitzele, One More Day, 21 September)

Make a point of recognizing small changes and improvements. (After - Courage to Change, 20 September)

The members of the computer committee are discussing a problem I noticed. When I used the computers in the hallway at the Bowie Senior Center I wasn't able to read the short course descriptions. I'm able to read them from the computer I'm using at home. After an exchange of Email between the committee members we think we understand what happened. The two computers in the hallway can't read files with the ".doc" extension of MSWord and the other word processing programs of MicroSoft. This may happen when someone tries to read those files from home. We think the best way around the problem is to convert the files to the PDF file format.
