Substance

As we age, our ideas, formerly light, rambling, and unrelated to each other, become more densely gathered into values and a philosophy giving our lives substance and firmness.

Yesterday the three of us were out for a while enjoying the day.  We went to the Fall Bazaar and Auction at the Greenbelt Community Church in Greenbelt, MD for the bake sale and bazaar. Melva's friend, Laura, had three tables set up along one wall. Melva donated several items for the sale. We've been going to this sale for many years.  The church is on Crescent Drive and it is easy to get there by entering Greenbelt from Kenilworth Avenue.

We also attended the bazaar at the Patuxent Research Refuge National Wildlife Visitor Center near Laurel, MD.  The Center was completed in 1994. Melva and I had been there before, but not since the building was erected. We decided not to take the tram ride because it was too chilly.  We did walk out to the lake at the end of our visit.  One of the retired ladies encouraged me to consider doing volunteer work. There were quilts on display from the Southern Comforters of Bowie, MD.

Everyone bought something at the two bazaars.  Cyndi got a green cameo broach set in sterling silver and she won a matted sunset photo door prize at Wildlife Visitor Center.  Melva bought a pair of pants and baked goods.  I bought a book, "1001 Ways to Live in the Moment," by Chronicle Books to go with their book, "1001 Ways To Relax," that I bought in January 2011.

Values

Melva's African Violet - photo by Mr. Dickie

All we do and say should reflect our personal standards and beliefs - the values that affirm God's own life within us and within all other people and creatures; and that lead to the common good.

I was outside for a while today helping Melva clear the spreading grass from the large circular garden in front of the house. Lots of digging and pulling is needed to remove the long roots from the dirt. Melva shutdown the project when  about 2/3rds of the circle was complete.  The remaining part isn't so overgrown.  Another hour of work should complete the work.

A Conger researcher claims that Abigail Adelia Grant, who married Charles Curtis Conger was the niece of Ulysses S. Grant.  There was no source citation.  I couldn't find any information on the Internet to indicate that either of the brothers of U.S. Grant had children.  I wrote a post about the challenge for my genealogy blog.

Ungodly Values

Is it time for you to get involved in combating systems or programs that uphold ungodly values?

Toxic People

Your best defense against the harm of toxic people is to be like David [King David of the Bible] and have a clear set of values that you live out with all people.

[When you do this] One of three things will happen:

  1. The people who are good for you will respect your values, and you will enjoy good relationships with them.
  2. As you take a loving stand against toxicity, you will influence some toxic people to change their behavior, and then you will enjoy good relationships with those people,
  3. Some toxic people will remain in denial and move away from the light that you are living out despite your loving confrontation of their behavior. Your relationship with those people might even end, in extreme cases.

Coming Or Going

You can tell a lot about which direction your life is heading by looking at the people with whom you've chosen to spend your time and share your ideas. Their values and priorities impact the way you think and act. (John C. Maxwell, Leadership, 11 April)

I've been working on a genealogy project. I'm using the project to help me learn more about how to use version five of my genealogy program, RootsMagic, which is installed on my laptop computer. I rekeyed most of the information in the 1959 genealogy document, The Amos Tree, of Roy Lee and Norma (Latham) Henthorn into the program. Then I added information from the PAF 2.31 version of my William Henthorn file. I prepared and posted to the Internet a Register report for Robert Henthorn, the father of Amos Henthorn. I'm pleased with the payback from the project.

Justice, Equality, Tolerance

Are justice, equality, and tolerance ...
[values] that we pursue or just words that we utter?
Do we need to change .. the priorities of our lives?

Mindset

When we ... associate with people of a certain mindset, we tend to take on their values and their dreams. (Laurie Beth Jones, The Path, p. 16-17) 18 March 2013

The Reality Of The Present

A society that has lost its soul looks for security in the future and is willing to deny the reality of the present. But a society can't move ahead if its values and ideals are jammed behind failures and mistakes. It has to own up to its neglect and its atrocity, while at the same time proclaiming its highest values. It is possible for a society to deal with the moral pollution of its history. Gestures, language, acts of compensation, and rites of forgiveness can all be effective. But they have to be done sincerely, without guile and without mere formalism.
