Reading and Study

Library of Congress Main Reading Room

Through reading and study a reader's experience may stretch back through several centuries, but his or her primary experiences rest firmly in day-to-day life.

No One

If you are looking for no one to support you, I can guarantee you that the universe will present you with experience mirroring your low expectations [and no one will show up].

The Problem In Life

But the problem in life is that we all, in some situations, come to the end of our abilities, strength, knowledge, and experience, and at that moment, just having faith in faith, or belief in belief, or even faith in ourselves is not enough. We need more.

Greatest Achievements

The greatest achievements are the results of accumulated experience, maturity, and the application of healthy principles.

Today is just a brief entry in our daily journals ...

Tomorrow holds great promise for us if we can see it as another page in our lives instead of the whole book.

Yesterdays

Yesterdays have no value except as experience, to be used in making today and the future more fruitful.

******

This morning I watched a very nice 30-minute program about The Library of Congress film collection on C-Span3. I believe it is a two-part program. They didn't show both episodes. Did you know that many of the early short films are available for viewing online? I didn't. Go to loc.gov and click on the photo of the man sneezing.

Mistakes

Someone who keeps repeating the same mistakes hasn't taken his past experience to heart.

Experience

I long to put the experience of fifty years at once into your young lives, to give you at once the key of that treasure chamber every gem of which has cost me tears and struggles and prayers, but you must work for these inward treasures yourselves. Marriage

[Marriage] ... can mature you like few other experiences can, but the process is neither easy nor entirely pleasurable. (Thomas Moore, Dark Nights Of The Soul, p. 148) 22 April 2013

Wrapping Up The Year

This is the day on which another year closes. It is a good time for a quiet, honest look at our personal progress. Has it been a good year, better than those which went before? Has the day-by-day guidance of your personal program brought you to a greater realization and acceptance of yourself, the unique individual that you are? (after One Day At A Time In Al-Anon, 31 December)

As we look back over the year just gone, it has been a good year to the extent that we have put good thoughts, good words, and good deeds into it. None of what we have thought, said, or done need be wasted. Both the good and the bad experiences can be used to our profit. In a sense, the past is not entirely gone. The result of it, for good or evil, is with us at the present moment. We can only learn by experience and none of our experience is completely wasted.  We can humbly thank God for the good things of the year. (after Twenty-Four Hours A Day, 31 December)

If you have regrets for errors or omissions, dismiss them.  The new year which lies before us will allow no time for futile regrets. Live just one day at a time, making each one better than the last, as you grow in confidence and faith. (after One Day At A Time In Al-Anon, 31 December)

Greetings to everyone who visited Mr. Dickie's Blog or saw it on my Facebook wall during 2012. It is my hope that something I posted made you think, or smile and that nothing I posted offended.

Peak Experience

A peak experience is more of an indication of what can be than a stable state of being. (Larsen and Hegarty, Believing In Myself, 6 November) 18 November 2011

******

Yesterday morning, Cyndi and I attended the NARFE Health Benefit meeting at the Old Bowie City Hall.  We spent quite a bit of time talking to the GEHA representative.  We are both concerned about whether I need to make changes in the health coverage for Melva and myself.

After the meeting Cyndi dropped me off at the Senior Center where I attended the meeting of the computer club.  Member, Bob Davis, gave the talk on three interesting subjects: making your own two-sided, colored, business cards, wireless earphones for TV viewing, and 3-D television.  I thought he did a great job.

In the evening I used Skype to have a video chat with computer club member and Facebook buddy, Dan L.   Cyndi was on the other computer at the same time having a video chat with her friend in Germany. That was fun.

Experience

No one can buy experience; that is something for which only the years can pay.

The Gift Of Experience

Sometimes it would seem that the only gift which experience gives to some people is the gift of pouring cold water on the schemes and plans and dreams of others; and that all they have learned from experience is the vast number of things which are impossible. It is a Christian duty ever to use experience to guide and to encourage, and not to daunton and to discourage. (William Barclay, The Letter To Titus, p. 285)
