Immatuity

Little Free Library at University Park, MD

A person remains immature, whatever his age, as long as he thinks of himself as an exception to the human race.
(Harry A. Overstreet in Night Light by Amy E. Dean, 21 June)

******

I wrote a blog post about using Facebook messages for file sharing. I uploaded the post today to my Genealogy blog.  I also shared the post with my "secret group" on Facebook.  I also posted a link to my Obituary blog about the legality of using obituaries in our genealogy projects.

Melva and I went to four thrift stores yesterday looking for something we didn't find.  I found one book that I was seeking, a like-new hard-bound copy of Daily Guideposts - 2014. For several years I purchased a year-old copy of this annual publication shortly after the start of the new year. I enjoy using this book in my daily reading program. I'm still reading the 2013 copy because I set it aside for a while last year. I probably mentioned before that I have read all of these books published between 1978 and 2012.  I no longer own copies because I needed to free up some space.

I also bought a copy of Moravian Daily Texts - 2013 which is also designed for daily reading. I remembered that I own an earlier edition of this publication and enjoyed it.  There were about a half dozen annual copies, for different years, on the shelf.  I thought one year would be enough.

The third book I purchased was Prayers from the Heart - Inspiration for Every Day!  This book is also designed for daily reading, with each day numbered.

I bought the self-titled CD, Lawson Creek Grass.  I'm not familiar with this Bluegrass band from Alton, VA.  I think it is fun to buy an album once in a while by someone I've never heard.

This morning I'm listening to some Aker Bilk music downloaded from Freegal the county library free music service.

Stumbling Blocks or Stepping Stones

So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God. Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister.

Organization & Planning

Stop imposing rigid demands for organization and planning on the lives of others.
(Dr. Wayne W. Dyer, The Sky's The Limit, p. 223)

A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control.
(Daily Guideposts - 2012, Proverbs 29:11 (NIV), 8 September)

We don't achieve victory once, then never have to bother with it again.

I Have Noticed

Even so, I have noticed one thing, at least, that is good. It is good for people to eat, drink, and enjoy their work under the sun during the short life God has given them, and to accept their lot in life.

Desire of Knowing

Leave off that excessive desire of knowing; therein is found much distraction. There are many things the knowledge of which is of little or no profit to the soul. (Thomas a' Kempis, in One Day At A Time In Al-Anon, 20 July)
Authority also preserves us from danger.  Without proper authority, the two alternatives are chaos (no one in charge) or oppression (a despot in charge).
(Cloud & Townsend, Boundaries Face To Face, p. 255)

I trust myself to participate in my life.  I am connected to the source of all energy and healing power.
(Perry Tilleraas, The Color Of Light, 7 December)

Guard against self-justification and self-righteousness.  Be aware how easy it is to make excuses and to blame your misfortunes on others.
(after One Day At A Time In Al-Anon, 19 June)

The good we do during our lives endures long after us.  Indeed, we may never be aware of our greatest contributions.
(Daily Guideposts - 2012, 19 June)

Do what you can with what you have, where you are.
(Theodore Roosevelt in Night Light by Amy E. Dean, 3 November)

Our action or response should be appropriate to the situation.

What Do I Know?

The title scholar suggests that a person has gone to school, and that he studied, but it does not mean that he has acquired any truly important knowledge. (George Lichtenberg in A Calendar Of Wisdom by Leo Tolstoy, 27 July)

When you are willing to acknowledge that you don't know, you open yourself to all sorts of information and assistance from life. (Iyanla Vanzant, Until Today! 20 August)

The wiser a person is, the simpler the language he uses to express his thoughts. (Lucy Malory, in A Calendar Of Wisdom by Leo Tolstoy, 22 August)

It is better to know less than necessary than to know more than necessary. Do not fear the lack of knowledge, but truly fear unnecessary knowledge which is acquired only to please vanity. (Leo Tolstoy, A Calendar Of Wisdom, 23 September)

The educated person sins greatly if he continues to behave in a way he knows is wrong. (Leo Tolstoy, A Calendar Of Wisdom, 24 September)

It is enough for the disciple that he becomes like his teacher . ... (Matthew 10:25 (NAS), Daily Guideposts - 2010, 9 September)

Letting Go

  • To let go does not mean to stop caring; it means I can't do it for someone else.
  • To let go is not to be in the middle, arranging all the outcomes, but to allow other people to affect their own destinies.
  • To let go is not to fix but to be supportive.
  • To let go is not to be protective; it's to permit another to face reality.
  • To let go is to fear less and to love more.
  • When you love someone deeply, letting go is incredibly hard.
  • But I realized I must let go, for I do not own what I love.

What Are You Saying?

I can listen to someone's fears today, but I can't change them or take them away.  My role is limited and that's good. (Karen Casey, Keepers Of The Wisdom, 25 July)

He who answers before listening -- that is his folly and his shame. (Proverbs 18:13 (NIV), Daily Guidepost - 2011, 25 June)

This Way / That Way

Addiction is a disease of amnesia. (Jane Velez Mitchell, Addict Nation, p. 253)

Only those who know their weaknesses can be tolerant of the weaknesses of their neighbors. (Leo Tolstoy, A Calendar Of Wisdom, 30 July)

If we were to subject every prison inmate to psychiatric scrutiny the category of intermittent rage disorder would begin to look very real indeed. (Ratey & Johnson, Shadow Syndromes, p. 148)

Free will must lead to freedom. (A Course In Miracles, Chapter 3, VI, 11, 3)

How much precious thinking time we waste, fretting over past mistakes and missed opportunities. (One Day At A Time In Al-Anon, 13 April)

Don't let worries about tomorrow rob you of the pleasure of today. (Rick Hamlin in Daily Guideposts - 2010, 10 May)

Trench points out that a witness must satisfy three essential conditions.

  1. He must have seen with his own eyes that of which he tells.
  2. He must be absolutely honest so that he repeats with accuracy that which he has heard and seen.
  3. He must have the ability to tell what he has to say, so that his witness may make its true impression on those who hear.

Monday Thoughts

(Photo: Mr. Dickie - Train Station at Frostburg, MD)

If you are what you do, then when you don't, you aren't. (Dr. Wayne W. Dyer, Pulling Your Own Strings, p. 151)

How often do you silently do a task simply because it has to be done? (after Penney Schwab in Daily Guideposts - 2011, 28 March)

I'll seek out a good conversation today.  If no one is handy, I'll read a book and look up all the words I'm not familiar with. (Karen Casey, Keepers Of The Wisdom, 24 January)

The Source Of The Problem

Have you ever blamed others without even considering that you might be the source of the problem.  Resolve that next time you will examine your own faults first. (after Joshua Sundquist, in Daily Guideposts - 2011, 24 February)
