Easier Said Than Done

PEACE

When confronted with conflict, we can choose to feel peace.

When attacked in any way, we can make the decision not to fight.

We can come from a place of restraint and
not act out in any hostile way,
even if we want to.

We do not have to act out our thoughts or emotions.

We can pause and wait
until we can come from our volition,
from our choice.

We can
choose peace.

Today we can wait until all negative and hostile feelings lose their power over us before we say or do anything. We can take the time to breathe in peace and love, no matter what is going on in our lives.

(after Time For Joy by Ruth Fishel, 4 October)

Poverty

Poverty affects people in a multitude of ways beginning in infancy and childhood. How can poverty begin to be alleviated in your community? Literacy programs are a start.
Show kindness and mercy ... do not oppress the widow, the orphan, the alien, or the poor; and do not devise evil ... against one another. (Zechariah 7:9,10)
(The Christophers, Three Minutes A Day, Vol. 44, 7 July)

We stopped at the library yesterday to drop off movies and music.  We also visited the bookstore in the basement.  Someone donated music CDs that I found on the top shelf.  The price for each CD was twenty-five cents.  I bought twelve cases, containing sixteen CDs for $3.00.  All were in "like new" condition. I was familiar with the performers on all but three of the CDs ( * new to me)

Time-Life - Lifetime of Romance (8 CDs in 4 cases)
Northern Lights - Living it the City (*)
John Yates & The Yates Brothers with Wyatt Rice (*)
The Freight Hoppers - Waiting on the Gravy Train (*)

Understanding

I have understood nothing of what I have read so I have to go back and read it all over again.
(Frederick Buechner, Listening To Your Life, p. 276)

We went to the thrift store yesterday. I was looking for one more 2015 calendar. I found two and didn't like either. They were offering a 40% discount with their VIP card. I looked at the CDs twice and found six in like-new condition that I bought for $1.19 each. Three are Bluegrass. Mickey Basil, a cousin of Kathy Lee Gifford, plays piano and sings in the Annapolis, MD area. Mickey played piano at one of Wayne Taylor's Bluegrass concerts in Crofton, MD.
  1. Gene Pitney - 20 Greatest Hits
  2. The Bluegrass 45 - Once Again From Kobe, Japan
  3. Claire Lynch - Friends For A Lifetime

Celebration

Norfolk, VA

The other day we went to the double thrift store on New Hampshire Avenue.  CDs at both stores were priced at $1.91.  I didn't discover until I got to the checkout that the second place had a sale, "buy four and get one free." I hope I didn't buy any duplicates.

I bought:
  1. Corel Gallery Magic (2 disc of images)
  2. Mary Chapin Carpenter - Party Doll
  3. K.D. Lang - Invincible Summer
  4. Patty Loveless - Dreamin' My Dreams
  5. Washington National Cathedral - Centennial Celebration
  6. Brooks & Dunn - The Greatest Hits Collection II
  7. Brooks & Dunn - Hillbilly Deluxe
  8. Nickel Creek - Why Should The Fire Die?
  9. Chely Wright - The Metropolitan Hotel
I also remembered to download my weekly free music allotment from the county library Freegal service.  This time I selected Johnny Rodriguez - Desperado, A Decade of Hits.

I'm in music lovers heaven.

Melva, Cyndi and I went to the huge multi-family yard sale in the University Park community today.  I hit the CD Jackpot.  At one house I bought 15 CDs for $15.00.  I got some country, some Bluegrass, some jazz and many latin discs.

What Do You Think?

We seem to be thinking hard all the time, but it is mostly about our troubles, and who's to blame for them. (One Day At A Time In Al-Anon, 26 July) 23 September 2012

I'm working on a project to create just over forty PDF files from the posts on a blog.  I used the Print Friendly application to create the PDFs.  There's a free online application, Merge PDF, that will merge all of the PDFs into one PDF which I can easily print or share.  My testing  yesterday seemed to confirm that everything will work together.

Yesterday (22 Sep 2012) we went to a PTA booksale in Hyattsville, MD.  They priced the CDs at 50 cents each.  It's hard to resist when you can buy them at that price.  I bought thirteen and arrived home with fourteen because one was a two CD set.  Here's the list of my treasures.

  1. Dixie Chicks - Taking The Long Way
  2. Emmy Lou Harris - Cowgirl's Prayer
  3. Al DiMeola, John McLaughlin, Paco De Lucia - Friday Night in San Francisco
  4. Alan Jackson - High Mileage
  5. Seattle Symphony - Howard Hanson Symphonies No. 3 & No. 6
  6. Nanci Griffith - Other Voices | Other Rooms
  7. Mark O'Connor - The New Nashville Cats
  8. Mark O'Connor's Hot Swing Trio - Live In New York
  9. Mark O'Connor's Hot Swing Trio - In Full Swing
  10. k.d. lang - Live By Request
  11. Essential Blues - House of Blues (2)
  12. Various Artists - American Fiddle Tunes (Library of Congress)
  13. Dr. Wayne W. Dyer - Changing Your Thoughts Meditation

On Wednesday (19 Sep 2012) we went to the double thrift store on New Hampshire Ave.  There were some good CDs there too.  I bought five.

  1. Richard Clayderman - All By Myself (2)
  2. John Gary - The Very Best Of
  3. Chuck Mangione - Chase The Clouds Away
  4. Phil Vassar - Phil Vassar
  5. Ronnie McCoury - Heartbreak Town

Today Is

Yesterday is a canceled check.
Tomorrow is a promissory note.

(Warren W. Wiersbe, Chapter-By-Chapter Bible Commentary, p. 678)

When I ripped some music from CDs I saved them in the WMA format.  Later I learned that it would have been better to have them in MP3 format.  This format seems to work well with Google Music, Spotify and other things I like to do.  I downloaded and installed a program called: Switch Sound File Converter from NCH Software.  I used this program to convert the files from WMA to MP3.

I also downloaded and installed a file manager program called Double Commander which displays two file lists at the same time.  This is very handy if you want to quickly selected and drag and drop files to copy from one folder to another.  I made good use of this program during the music file conversions.  One feature that was particularly useful was the ability to search for files with a particular file extension.  For example: when I thought I was nearing the end of the file conversion project I checked to see if there were files with the extension "*.WMA" that I'd missed.

During the last week I installed the Skype program on the laptop.  I added computer club member, Dan L., as my first contact.  I received my first call this evening when Dan noticed that I had Skype running and called.  It took a minute to get my bearings and turn off some music I had playing on the computer.  We conducted a nice video call of more than thirty minutes. At the end we hung up and I practiced calling Dan back to make sure I could initiate a call from my end.  I think we are ready to encourage some relatives in Panama to get Skype working.

Serious Times

Whatever you do takes time, and yet it is always now. (Eckhart Tolle, A New Earth, p. 266)

In any realm of life success depends on obedience to the word of the expert.  (William Barclay, The Letter to the Hebrews, p. 34)

No Man Need Stay The Way He Is, (Title of a Fosdick sermon in The Letters To Timothy by William Barclay, p. 251)

Each of us must make our way through these serious times, carefully ordering our priorities and doing what we need to do to safeguard our spiritual growth.  (Casey and Vanceburg, The Promise Of A New Day, 6 August)
******

Yesterday I spent the afternoon in Bowie, MD.  I attended the computer club meeting at the Senior Center.  I assisted with setting up and breaking down the room.  Florence brought her desktop computer running Windows XP. We connected the computer to the projector.  She needed some help with with the use of her floppy and CD drives.  The computer was quite slow even when it was hard wired to the Internet.  After the meeting Bob B. made several changes in an attempt to eliminate the problems.

After the club meeting I went to the libraries in Bowie and Crofton to return books and CDs.  I checked out ten more CDs from Crofton.  I selected several CDs by country artists who are new to me.

This is my second day using the new Blogger editor.  I like it so far.  The Label entry works better and the formatting commands are better.  The Preview displays how the page will actually look.  Overall I give them a "thumbs up."

Quiet Time

If you are not in the state of either acceptance, enjoyment, or enthusiasm, look closely and you will find that you are creating suffering for yourself and others. (Eckhart Tolle, A New Earth, p. 295)

Most of my "bad luck" is directly attributable to conditions I allowed to develop. (Larsen and Hegarty, Believing In Myself)

I will ... include ... quiet time in each day, remembering this especially in times of family upheavals and dissension. (One Day At A Time In Al-Anon, 29 July)

I installed a button on my copy of Picasa 3 which will allow me to upload photos from Picasa to my Facebook albums. I tested one time and it worked. I'm not certain how often I will use it.

I'm working on a project to create a Facebook Page for the Monroe County Ohio Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society. As always with Facebook there is a lot to learn. There are some features that I like and some things that are confusing to "say the least."

Yesterday I attended the computer club meeting and afterward stopped at the Crofton library to check out some CDs. This time I found ten that looked brand new.

Life Has To Be Lived

It probably takes an idiot or a saint to be consistently positive in this world of cynicism, cruelty, and corruption. (Casey and Vanceburg, The Promise of a New Day, 4 April)

Life has to be lived - that's all there is to it. At seventy, I would say the advantage is that you take life more calmly. You know that 'this too shall pass!' (Eleanor Roosevelt in The Book Of Choices by Mike Magee, M.D., p. 81)

******

I checked out ten CDs from the Crofton library. Then I bought eleven more CDs during the last week. Now I have so much music on hand I'm having trouble listening to all of it. I'm in music heaven.

Yesterday I made some progress learning about how to use Cascading Style Sheets to layer what the webpage viewer sees on the screen. Often the books and online samples I'm reading seem to leave a lot to be desired. I suppose they are assuming I know something that I don't. I want to tile a background, then add a logo, table of contents buttons, regular text and italic text. Now I'm working on placing the various elements on the webpage.

Education

As I grow older, part of my emotional survival plan must be to actively seek inspiration instead of passively waiting for it to find me. (Bebe Moore Campbell in Black Pearls by Eric V. Copage, 17 September)

Learning is forever in my control. The decision is personal and perhaps must be made each day anew. The choice is mine. (Casey and Vanceburg, The Promise Of A New Day, 25 March)

If you think education is expensive - try ignorance. (Derek Bok in The Book Of Choices by Mike Magee, M.D., p. 230)

Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who was impacted by the severe weather this weekend. These events are a constant reminder of how dangerous life on this planet can be. Also in our thoughts and prayers are family and friends who are dealing with serious illness in their own life or the lives of their loved ones. Which reminds all of us that each day of good health is a blessing, not to be taken lightly.

We are also grateful to the company that offered a job to our nephew who has been looking for work for quite a while. We are praying for friends and family who are looking for work. Don't give up! Remain engaged in the process. Don't take "no" for an answer, call back, write again, drop in. Network, tell other people you are looking for work, give them a copy of your resume. Maybe they will pass it on to someone at the place where they work. I once got a job because I stood at the front of the Greyhound shuttle from Laurel, MD to Washington, DC and told everyone I was looking for work.

I'm interested in relearning what little I knew about Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). I can't find the CSS I created years ago. I suppose it is on the hard drive of the laptop computer that stopped working. Rather than fret about it, I'll start over and create another style sheet. I have one book I like which has several good chapters on the topic. There's also lots of good information online. This morning I've been looking at the library catalog to see what's available. Many of their books on HTML and CSS are checked out. There seems to be lots of interest in the subject. Creating a style sheet for the genealogy society website could be a big help when we want to create a new page.

I'm having a hard time keeping up my plan for daily reading. In recent weeks I have been struggling to read from each book every day. Once I get behind I have a difficult time getting caught back up.

Over the weekend I bought three new CDs. I don't purchase new CDs very often. I bought one at the Bluegrass show in Virginia and two at Target yesterday. I got Wayne Taylor, Alison Krauss and K.D. Lang. The CDs by the ladies received nice reviews in the newspaper. This morning I remembered to do my weekly download of three free MP3 files from the county library system. I selected three songs from a guitar album by Los Indios Tabajaras.

Life is learned by modeling. All forms of life and all living are formative. We pay a price in our own development for the way we treat - positive or negative - the world and her inhabitants. (Mike Magee, M.D., The Book of Choices, p. 80)

It's Spring-like again today. Melva and I went to see a quilt exhibit in the Marlboro Galley at the Prince Georges Community College. The exhibit ends this week. The quilts were very interesting and very pretty. I took some pictures with my digital camera. Afterward we went to lunch at a grill in Bowie that we hadn't tried before.

When we got back to the house I noticed that the interior lights stayed on in the minivan. I left directly to drop the van off at the dealer. This is the second time I tried to get this problem fixed. I wonder if they will disconnect the battery this evening if they can't get to the job until tomorrow. If I were a betting man I'd bet against the service manager passing my concern on to a mechanic. Oh well, life goes on. It's the price we pay for having so many machines in our lives.

I'm listening to the Santana album - Supernatural album this afternoon. It's not my favorite album. I need to be in the right mood to listen to Santana.

The Game of Life

The present moment is the field on which the game of life happens. (Eckhart Tolle, A New Earth, p. 115)

It is common sense to take a method and try it. If it fails, admit it frankly and try another, but above all, try something. (Franklin D. Roosevelt in The Book Of Choices, by Mike Magee, M.D., p. 146)

Too often those who should be leading are standing in the way. (Warren W. Wiersbe, Chapter-By-Chapter Bible Commentary, p. 252)

Cyndi and I went for a nice fifty-minute, four-lap walk at Schrom Park yesterday. This was my first walk at the park this year.

I updated my music catalog file yesterday. I was surprised at how many CDs didn't have a number assigned yet. This morning I posted the last five CDs to the catalog I keep on my computer.

Last night I listened to the two Renee Fleming CDs I bought. On her By Request album I really like the Bachianas brasileiras No. 5: Aria (Cantilena) by Villa-Lobos. It's amazing how many interesting used CDs are available for $2.00 or less.

During the afternoon yesterday the weather was nice. Melva and I went for a walk in the neighborhood. We are one of the few couples who do this. Afterward we went to the double thrift store on New Hampshire Avenue. I hit the CD jackpot again. I spent $12.28 and came home with ten CDs. It's time to update my music catalog again.
  • Josh Groban - Closer - $1.91
  • 101 Strings - Love Collection (3 discs) - $1.91
  • Aaron Tippin - Read Between the Lines - $1.41
  • Karrin Allyson - Azure Te - $1.41
  • Anna Netrebko - Opera Arias - $1.41
  • Renee Fleming - Verisom - $1.41
  • Renee Fleming - By Request - $1.41
  • Pinchas Zukerman and St. Paul Chamber - Vivaldi - Four Seasons - $1.41
I also purchased a two-CD National Geographic Trip Planner for 80 cents. There are photos on one of the CDs that can be used without installing the software.

I posted a Most Wanted piece about one of the Peter Yohos to MyBox. Before the day was over I received responses from Tim Yoho and Vernon Anderson telling me where he fits into the Yoho family tree. I'm going to add their comments to that webpage and post it again.

Keep Your Voice Down

It would save a great deal of heartbreak in this world if we simply learned to keep our voices down and if, when we had nothing good to say to a person, we did not say anything at all. (William Barclay, The Letters to the Galatians and Ephesians, p. 159)

After doing some business at the bank yesterday I stopped at the bookstore in the library. I found three CDs in almost new condition for $2.00 each. I bought: Sara Evans - Born to Fly; Kelly Willis - Easy and Luis Miguel - Complices. I'll give Melva the Luis Miguel album to play in her car. I hadn't visited the bookstore in several months because I heard a rumor from one of the volunteers that they were going to close. Friday I went to the CDepot in College Park to see if I could find some CDs for Lisette to take to her father in Costa Rica. I hadn't stopped in this place in months. Within seconds of coming into the store I seemed to be directed to a shelf on the left wall. The shelf was about three feet wide and seven feet tall. Everything on the shelf was priced at $1.99. Most of the shelves were so full it was difficult to remove a CD in order to view it. Many of the CDs were still in shrink wrap. I selected twenty-two CDs for Pedro. For Melva I selected: John Mellencamp - Dance Naked; Ricky Martin - Sound Loaded; and Annie Lennox - Bare. For myself I selected: John Barry - Faces; Tish Hinojosa - Sign of Truth; Craig Duncan - Smoky Mountain Sunday; Ralph Stanley - Ralph Stanley; Rich O'Brien - Seasons, Roads, and Faces. I also stopped at the Bluegrass trays in the back of the store where I bought more expensive CDs: Bluegrass All Stars - Sixteen Grand Slams From Sugar Hill Records and the two CD-set from Nickel Creek - Reasons Why (The Very Best). All in all I think I "Hit the Jackpot" again.

Yesterday the three of us went via the subway to Capitol Hill to meet Lisette for a late lunch at The Hunan Dynasty. I used my new Senior SmartTrip card for the first time. (From now on I'll receive the senior discount.) Lisette had a cellphone Cyndi loaned her. She used it to call us from the west side of the Capitol. I walked over there to meet her as she came around to the east side of the building. By the time we went up to the restaurant the bussed in patrons had cleared out. We should have received excellent service since there was hardly anyone in the place. All four plates of food and the rice were cold. We sent them back to the kitchen to be heated. We also had to ask for the egg rolls which came with the meals. If we wanted to impress our guest we certainly did, in a negative way.

Today Lisette returns to Costa Rica from National Airport.

This morning I took Cyndi to the New Carrollton subway station where she took the 8:30 a.m. train to Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI), near Baltimore. She called a little after 9:00 a.m. to tell me she was on the shuttle bus headed to the terminal. She works this week in San Antonio, TX. She plans to return to BWI on Wednesday and to take the train back to the subway station which is just a mile from the house.

The snow yesterday didn't amount to much. Melva and I drove in it when we went out to eat lunch at Bob Evans in Bowie.

In the afternoon Melva watched the tennis match while I went to CD Depot. They sell both new and used CDs. My goal was to see if I could find some reasonable CDs to give as gifts. I hadn't been to the store in a long time. As a matter of fact I wasn't certain they were still in business. I'd only been in the store for a couple of minutes when I discovered a rack to $1.99 CDs on the left wall. I went crazy buying CDs for myself, for Melva and to use as gifts. I also stopped at the Bluegrass section and selected two more expensive albums for myself.

Thriftstore Shopping

The tragedy of life is that people who hold different views very often finish up disliking not each others' views, but each other. It should be possible to differ with a man and yet remain friends. (William Barclay, the Letters to the Galatians and Ephesians, p. 48)

On Monday we went to the 25% Off Sale at the thrift store. I found a book about creating webpages by Laura Lemay. Part of the book was about Style Sheets which interests me. Much to my dismay the price, written in grease pencil, had been rubbed off. I took the book to the area where they price the merchandise knowing full-well that they wouldn't price the book for me. Late yesterday I went back to the store to see if I could find the book. As I entered the store I was encouraged because there was a small sign by the door announcing that books and CDs were 50% off. I didn't find the book.

I bought five CDs and four books. The CDs I bought were: Santana - Supernatural (71 cents); Dvorak - Symphony No. 9 and Te Deum (71 cents); Tammy Wynette - The Best Of (40 cents); Beethoven - Symphony No. 9 (40 cents); Brahms and Schumann - Symphonies No. 1 (40 cents).

The four books I purchased were: Rick Steves - Italian - Phrase Book and Dictionary (40 cents), I needed this because I want to be able to read the Facebook postings of the Dalu family in Italy; William P. Young - The Shack (40 cents), I bought this one to replace a copy I gave to someone else before I read it; Mike Magee - The Book of Choices (71 cents); Thomas Kinkaide (71 cents), I may already have a copy of this one, my memory failed me.

While at the thrift store I dropped off three donation items that should have left our house long ago.
