Enjoying Life

If we live each day to the best of our ability, we will soon find we don't have time to worry about the future or regret the past. We will be too busy enjoying life.
(Alateen - Hope For The Children Of Alcoholics in Hope For Today, p. 56, 19 May)

If you feel like you're helping too much, stop it immediately.
(Sondra Smalley in The Color Of Light by Perry Tilleraas, 17 May)

The next time I react to another's behavior, I'll ask myself how many times I've reacted the same way before.
(Hope For Today, 9 January)

Our hopes and desires may be able to weather the criticism of a stranger, but they have a more difficult time surviving when undermined by a friend.

Maintaining Hope

Mr. Dickie @ Busboys & Poets

Maintaining hope comes from seeing the potential in every situation and staying positive despite circumstances.
(John C. Maxwell, Leadership, 22 August)

Remember that men will go on doing the same things even if you should burst in protest.
(Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, Chapter VIII, 4)

Credibility

One of Melva's bags - photo by Mr. Dickie

Credibility precedes great communication. Believe in what you say. Then, live what you say. There is no greater credibility than conviction in action.

Anger

It is not men's acts which disturb us -- but our reaction to them. Take these away, and anger goes. No wrong act of another can bring shame on you.
(Marcus Aurelius, in One Day At A Time In Al-Anon, 15 November)

Perhaps the most profound miracle of all is living through something we thought would kill us.
(Beth Moore, Praying God's Word Day By Day, 16 November)

It isn't always easy to speak correction to those we know are clearly in the wrong. But the Lord uses strong leaders to correct His people, courageous leaders who can speak the truth in love.

An Axe To Grind

... any time a person has an axe to grind, the words of others are drowned out by the sound of the grindstone.

Knowledge

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Good & Bad Leaders

  • Attitudes - When good leaders rule, people rejoice; when the wicked reign, people groan.
  • Stability - When moral leaders rule, they establish justice; compromising leaders tear things down.
  • Compassion - Good leaders express concern for the poor; bad leaders reflect no compassion for anyone.
  • Honesty - When leaders pay attention to lies, their staff begins to esteem the same deceptions.
  • Vision - Solid vision keeps everyone on track; chaos reigns whenever the vision lapses.

Where Are You Going?

There are basically two kinds of people in the world:

  • those who are growing personally and
  • those who are going nowhere and stagnating.
(Cloud and Townsend, God Will Make A Way, p. 33)

What is your intuition telling you right now?
(John C. Maxwell, Leadership, 17 July)

Develop an attitude of gratitude for all that manifests into your life.
Be thankful and filled with awe and appreciation, even if what you desire hasn't arrived yet.
Even the darkest days of your life are to be looked on with gratitude.

Discernment

... practice discernment.

Relationships can get messy; people often harbor personal agendas and attempt to mask their true motives or to make them sound more noble than they really are.

Time Is Passing

... time is passing and you don't have all the time in the world to accomplish what you desire.
(Thomas Moore, Dark Nights Of The Soul, p. 297)

One's life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.
(Luke 12:15 in Three Minutes A Day, Vol. 44, by The Christophers, 24 October)

Don't stop the flow of abundant energy by hoarding or owning what you receive. Keep it moving. Use your prosperity in the service of others, and for causes greater than your ego.
(Dr. Wayne W. Dyer, The Power Of Intention, p.185)

I urge you to simply accept the fact that you'll never get it all done and begin to live more fully in the only moment that you have - now!
(Dr. Wayne W. Dyer, The Power Of Intention, p. 194)

Although I cannot expect to achieve perfection, I can observe my progress and enjoy the deep satisfactions it can bring me.
(One Day At A Time In Al-Anon, 24 June)

Your home is your castle. Keep it clean and healthful as you can.
(The Christophers, Three Minutes A Day, Vol. 44, 20 October)

Solving a problem starts with changing your viewpoint.
(The Christophers, Three Minutes A Day, Vol. 41, 19 October)

My goal will be to make myself entirely ready to let go of the negative habits of thought that have been reflected in the happenings of my life.
(One Day At A Time In Al-Anon, 20 June)

The defects of character I want to be rid of, are sure to have deep roots in habit. My daily conscious cooperation will be needed as I ... try to deal with them patiently, one by one.
(One Day At A Time In Al-Anon, 20 June)

The dark night of illness sets severe limits on what you can do. It forces you to slow down and focus on things that matter.  It keeps you in one place and on your back...
(Thomas Moore, Dark Nights Of The Soul, p. 282)

This day belongs to me. I can do wonderful things with it, creative things, including the creation of order in my surroundings and in my mind. Nobody else owns my particular segment of time, so it depends on me how well I will fill every moment to my satisfaction.
(One Day At A Time In Al-Anon, 30 July)

The choices we make nearly always reflect our true character.
(John C. Maxwell, Leadership, 4 August)

Character isn't created in a crisis, it only comes to light. Everything you have done in the past -- and the things you have neglected to do -- come to a head when you're under pressure.
(John C. Maxwell, Leadership, 31 July)

[Often people] ... have personal patterns they are unable to change, ways of thinking, behaving, and living that defeat their best efforts.
(Cloud and Townsend, God Will Make A Way, p. 11)

Confront because you want to help solve a problem...
(Cloud and Townsend, Boundaries Face To Face, p. 228)

Positive confrontation is a sure sign that you care for a person and have their best interests at heart. Each time you build up ... [a person] and identify their problems, you give them an opportunity to grow.
(John C. Maxwell, Leadership, 28 July)

All confrontations require love so that the person you confront can metabolize the truth without feeling hated, bad, or defensive.
(Cloud and Townsend, Boundaries Face To Face, p. 226)

Finally, you may need to accept that the person ... [you are confronting] won't change. You may be dealing with a person who is ... [unable to listen or change] and confrontation may not help. At some point you may need to evaluate if you need to leave the relationship or setting because of the problem... or you may conclude that although you don't like what is going on, the advantages and good things make it worthwhile to stay. (Cloud and Townsend, Boundaries Face To Face, p. 263)

The true test of human contentedness is not wealth, but the answer to the questions, "Why am I here?" and, "What happens when I die?"
(I failed to record the source.)

Chaos

When the country is in chaos everybody has a plan to fix it -
But it takes a leader of real understanding to straighten things out.

Speak Up

Speak up for the people who have no voice,
for the rights of all the down - and outers.
Speak out for justice!
Stand up for the poor and destitute!

Aimlessness

I wonder where the author got her percentages.
I am appalled at the aimlessness of most people's lives. Fifty percent don't pay any attention to where they are going; forty percent are undecided and will go in any direction. Only ten percent know what they want, and even all of them don't go toward it. (Katherine Anne Porter, in Leadership by John C. Maxwell, 25 May)

The Force

My will shall shape the future.
Whether I fail or succeed shall be no man's doing but my own.
I am the force.
I can clear any obstacle before me or I can be lost in the maze.
My choice, my responsibility.
Win or lose, only I hold the key to my destiny.

Coming Or Going

You can tell a lot about which direction your life is heading by looking at the people with whom you've chosen to spend your time and share your ideas. Their values and priorities impact the way you think and act. (John C. Maxwell, Leadership, 11 April)

******
I've been working on a genealogy project. I'm using the project to help me learn more about how to use version five of my genealogy program, RootsMagic, which is installed on my laptop computer. I rekeyed most of the information in the 1959 genealogy document, The Amos Tree, of Roy Lee and Norma (Latham) Henthorn into the program. Then I added information from the PAF 2.31 version of my William Henthorn file. I prepared and posted to the Internet a Register report for Robert Henthorn, the father of Amos Henthorn. I'm pleased with the payback from the project.

  • Personal
  • Specific
  • Achievable
  • Measurable
  • Time-Sensitive

Banking On Good Will

All leaders have a certain amount of good will in their bank account when they start work at a new job. From then on, they either build up their account or pay it out. Bad decisions and poor people skills cost them until they run out of credit and credibility. It doesn't matter whether the blunders are big or small, when you're account is empty, you are out as a leader. (after John C. Maxwell, Leadership, 5 June) 5 June 2013

The Problem With Life

Photo: Neptune Plaza at the Library of Congress

It may seem painful to think and reflect, but bringing your own intelligence to bear on everyday experience can add an essential dimension that gives its own kind of pleasure. (Thomas Moore, Dark Nights Of The Soul, p. 31)

Spare time happens now, through conscious choices and decisions. ... Remember: we don't find spare time; we create it. (Doreen Virture, Ph.D., I'd Change My Life If I Had More Time, p. 3)

What is important in knowledge is not quantity, but quality. It is important to know what knowledge is significant, what is less so, and what is trivial. (Leo Tolstoy, A Calendar Of Wisdom, 14 November)

For though we are made especially for the sake of one another, still each of us has his own tasks. Otherwise another's faults would harm me, which God has not willed, in order that my happiness may not depend on another. (Marcus Aurelius, Meditations (paraphrased))

That is the problem with life. If we are not here, if we are not in the present moment, fully ourselves, we miss everything. (Tich Nhat Hanh in Shield & Carlson, For The Love Of God, p. 154)

We must all band together and treat people as dignified, and any efforts to divide people by class, nations, religions or any boundaries is strongly resisted by those who think in holistic ways. (Dr. Wayne W. Dyer, The Skies The Limit, p. 113)

You can tell a lot about which direction your life is heading by looking at the people with whom you've chosen to spend your time and share your ideas. (John C. Maxwell, Leadership, April introduction)
