75th Birthday

Thank You for the year just ahead
For the hope it holds
For the promise it proclaims
For the expectation of greater things
For the anticipation of what lies in the distance
For the opportunities You'll give me to bless others and for others blessing me
For 365 unseen days overflowing with Your grace.
(Jonathan Dukes in Prayers For Every Need, p. 237)

74th Birthday

I found that the men and women who got to the top were those who did the jobs they had in hand, with everything they had of energy, enthusiasm, and hard work. (Harry S. Truman in The Little Book Of Virtues, 7 May)

******
It's my 74th birthday.
Thanks to everyone who sent birthday messages.
Thanks to everyone who helped me along the way.
There have been many times in recent years
when
I doubted this day
would arrive.

Mother's Day

All of us are hampered to some degree by our need to justify our actions and words. (One Day At A Time In Al-Anon, 10 April)

Promises that you make to yourself are often like the Japanese plum tree - they bear no fruit. (Frances Marion in The Promise Of A New Day by Casey and Vanceburg, 15 April)

Nostalgia is a seductive liar. (George Ball in Believing In Myself by Larsen and Hegarty, 11 April)

Any life is an unfinished story. (Ron Palmer in Believing In Myself by Larsen and Hegarty, 5 March)

Happy Mother's Day!

Yesterday Cyndi took us to eat brunch at P.F. Chang's in Annapolis in celebration of my 72nd birthday and Mother's Day. Melva and I hadn't been to this chain before. There's a free parking garage across the street from the restaurant. After we ate we took some photos. Next we drove to the county seat at Upper Marlboro, Maryland where we attended the annual Marloboro Day held on Main Street. I bought three books at the library and Melva bought some plants in the nearby park. After supper Melva surprised me with a very tasty chocolate cake inscribed, "Happy Birthday Mr. Dickie." We took a few more photos before we cut and ate the delicious cake.

It's My Birthday!

It does not pay to get sour as you get old. I pity a man who lives in the past. He lives on stale manna. He gets stunted. (D.L. Moody in Chapter-By-Chapter Bible Commentary by Warren W. Wiersbe, p. 367)

******

Today is my 72nd birthday. I consider myself blessed to have lived this long. As I often say, "I'm in pretty good shape, for the shape I'm in."

This morning I finished reading "A Collection of Blessings," by Helen Steiner Rice.

A combined celebration of my birthday and Mother's Day is planned for mid-day at P.F. Chang's in Annapolis.

Thanks to everyone who sent birthday messages.

Birthday Lunch

[Make it your aim to] ... never make trouble, but always to see that trouble does not rear its head ... (after William Barclay, The Letters to the Galatians and Ephesians, p. 149)

******

Cyndi took Melva and I out to eat lunch yesterday to celebrate Melva's upcoming birthday. We ended up at The Pirate's Cove in Galesville, MD. We all ate different crab plates. The restaurant is on the west bank of the Chesapeake Bay.

90th Birthday

We should forget those things which are behind us and press onward toward something better. (Twenty-Four Hours a Day, 8 November)

******

I didn't post anything to my blogs yesterday. We attended the 90th birthday party for our next door neighbor, Wanda. It was held at the home of her daughter in Street, MD which is northeast of Baltimore and very near the Pennsylvania border. There was a nice crowd and we had a very nice time.

As of yesterday I have a new Facebook friend, Don Gardner, one of my very good friends from college days. I got a big kick out of seeing him on Facebook. I suggested that he make friends with four other college friends to help him get started.

I bought another nice book for fifty cents. It's a daily devotion book by Helen Steiner Rice - From The Heart. I'll use it during my daily reading time next year.

At the end of the week federal agents arrested the Prince George's County Executive and his wife and charged them with crimes related to "Pay For Play." He had about three weeks left in his second four-year term. At the beginning of November his wife had been elected to her first term on the county council. I sounds like there will be a very strong case against them. I believe they both face twenty-year prison terms.

It's My Birthday!

Nothing constructive results from meeting anger with anger; nobody wins the battle in which control is lost. (One Day At A Time in Al-Anon, 18 April)

The best way to destroy today is to regret "yesterday" and worry about "tomorrow." (Warren W. Wiersbe, Chapter-By-Chapter Bible Commentary)

Today is my 71st birthday. There have been many times when I doubted I'd see this day. I'm grateful to good doctors and other health professionals who guided and cared for me during the difficult times. Our daughter, Cyndi, took the day off from work today. She will take us out to eat lunch at the Edgewater, near Annapolis, where we will celebrate my birthday and Mother's Day.

On Thursday I attended the computer club meeting. The guest speaker was Tavon Jones, Apple Computer consultant at the Best Buy store in Annapolis, Maryland. This was the second time he came to speak to the group. He gave another outstanding talk. He brought along the new Apple IPad and passed it around for everyone to look at. Someone donated some items. I brought home a copy of the Broderbund Screen Capture program which should install on my Windows 2000 operating system.

Order Out Of Chaos

I'd rather be kind than right. (Dr. Wayne Dyer, 10 Secrets For Success and Inner Peace, p. 108)

... complaining about our oppressions and indignities only makes them loom larger and more disturbing. (One Day At A Time In Al-Anon, 15 March)

The Twelve Steps and the Serenity Prayer can be applied to all our problems whether or not they are related to addictions. (After, One Day At A Time In Al-Anon, 5 March, REH)

Today is the 109th anniversary of the birth of my mother, Ruth. She was a loving, daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, cousin, aunt, teacher, neighbor and church woman. She set a fine example that many of us still strive to follow.

I'm continuing to work on my music catalog. It's fun to review what I have available.

Today I'm planning to continue work on paper sorting, filing and shredding. I accept that it is a never ending project. I'm grateful for the invention of paper shredders. They are a big help. I've just about accepted that next Tuesday will be the day to recycle two cartons of First Day Cover magazines that I haven't looked at in years.

Miracles

There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle. (Albert Einstein in 10 Secrets for Success and Inner Peace, by Dr. Wayne Dyer, p. 133)

******
I woke up this morning with a vision problem. That's the first sign of a migraine headache. I took my usual preventive steps and got some relief. When this happens it pretty much puts me out of action for the rest of the day. I have a hunch the problem was brought on my some yard work I did yesterday. Sometimes I notice that my bad back can be the cause of a migraine after I do lots of bending.

Today is the 110th anniversary of my father, Edward Charles Henthorn. I created an Ahnentafel chart for Robert, the brother I never knew, in honor of the birthday.

Melva has been working on some of the spring yard clean-up.

70th Birthday

Photo: (Mr. Dickie in front of an azalea bush at his house.)

In the time that is left to me, I'm going to try to take it easy, to relax, to avoid worry, and to be helpful to others. (Alan L. Roeck, Look To This Day, 3 May)

Today is my 70th birthday. I was born on May 7, 1939 at Bryan Memorial Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska. I'm grateful that I achieved this milestone birthday. My parents, Edward and Ruth, shared much wisdom that has served me well during my lifetime. My educational experiences in Bellevue, Nebraska, Wichita, Kansas and Pittsburg, Kansas were positive because of many good teachers. Melva and I will celebrate our 42nd wedding anniversary next month. Our daughter Cyndi has brought great joy to our lives. It was my good fortune to make a living in the military and civilian government working in interesting and challenging jobs that I enjoyed. The military provided the opportunity to learn to speak Spanish which changed the course of my life. And, I survived four surgeries for rather serious health issues. I've had a good life!

Habits

The unfortunate thing about this world is that good habits are so much easier to give up than bad ones. (Somerset Maugham in One More Day by Sefra Kobrin Pitzele, 6 March)

Affirmation: I can begin today to develop strong, new habits and to hold on to my old, strong habits. (Sefra Kobrin Pitzele, One More Day, 6 March)

Truth cannot make a person unkind, or too self-assured; the manifestations of truth telling are humility and simplicity. (A Calendar of Wisdom by Leo Tolstoy, 24 February)

It takes a walk the length of a football field to burn off the calories in one M&M. (Susan Smith Jones, Choose to Live Each Day Fully, Day 38)
  • Today, on this the 109th birthday of my mother, Ruth, I remember her lovingly. She was a loving daughter, wife, sister, mother, aunt, cousin, mother-in-law, grandmother, teacher and Christian lady who set a good example for all. May she rest in peace.
  • Today I'm ready to review our tax returns for 2008. This year they sent them to me via Email. Last year I went to the office. I'm hopeful that I won't discover any last minute issues.
  • I spent time yesterday sorting and shredding paper. At the bottom of the bottom file cabinet drawer I found important documents that were misplaced in the paper clutter. It's good that I found them, but my timing was terrible. We needed them a month ago.
  • Before I started the laptop this morning I swapped out the CD drive and installed the small floppy drive. I have some genealogy data on floppies that I'm thinking about sharing on the Internet.
