Dreams

Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will be simpler, solitude will not be solitude, poverty will not be poverty, nor weakness, weakness.
(Henry David Thoreau in Flowers Along the Path by Esther Carls Dodgen, p. 199)

Poverty

Poverty affects people in a multitude of ways beginning in infancy and childhood. How can poverty begin to be alleviated in your community? Literacy programs are a start.
Show kindness and mercy ... do not oppress the widow, the orphan, the alien, or the poor; and do not devise evil ... against one another. (Zechariah 7:9,10)

******
We stopped at the library yesterday to drop off movies and music.  We also visited the bookstore in the basement.  Someone donated music CDs that I found on the top shelf.  The price for each CD was twenty-five cents.  I bought twelve cases, containing sixteen CDs for $3.00.  All were in "like new" condition. I was familiar with the performers on all but three of the CDs ( * new to me)

Time-Life - Lifetime of Romance (8 CDs in 4 cases)
Northern Lights - Living it the City (*)
John Yates & The Yates Brothers with Wyatt Rice (*)
The Freight Hoppers - Waiting on the Gravy Train (*)
Norman Blake & Rich O'Brien - Be Ready Boys
Ricky Skaggs - Favorite Country Songs
Tom T. Hall - Home Grown
New Coon Creek Girls featuring Dale Ann Bradley - Our Point of View
David Davis - My Dixie Home

Children

There is no greater reward for a well-spent life than to see one's children well-started in life, owing to their parent's good health, good principles, fixed character, good breeding, and in general the whole outfit, that enables them to fight the battle of life with success. (William Graham Sumner, 1840 - 1940), American Sociologist in Pocket Positives, no page numbering)

Our society and many parts of the world are not child friendly:
  • child labor is used to make expensive running shoes for the global economy;
  • child soldiers are trained to hold and fire guns;
  • military spending takes priority over funding for child care and children's education.
And here, in the richest country on earth, one in every five children lives in poverty.

These facts certainly imply that children are not welcome.
(Kolya Braun-Greiner in The Upper Room Disciplines - 2003, 19 September)

Love children especially for, like angels, they too are sinless and they live to soften and purify our hearts and, as it were, to guide us.
(Feodor Dostoevsky, 1821 - 1881, Russian Writer in Pocket Positives, no page numbering)

It's Not My Problem

People today foolishly try to believe that all the world's senselessness and cruelty -- the richness of the few, the great poverty of the many, the violence and warfare -- happens outside their own lives and does not interfere with them and their way of life. The Prophets

... The prophets taught that adherence to God's will would bring divine favor whereas disobedience would lead to hardship -- and surely obedience would be better for everyone involved, especially the poor, needy, and weak.  The prophets, in short, were concerned about issues of real life - poverty, homelessness, injustice, oppression, the uneven distribution of wealth, the apathetic attitudes of those who have it good toward those who are poor, helpless, and outcast. ... (Bart D. Ehrman, God's Problem, p. 54)

[Mr. Dickie's comment: The issues of real life haven't changed in thousands of years.]

Good Beginnings

It's pretty hard to tell what does bring happiness; poverty and wealth have both failed. (Ken Hubbard in A Book of Choices by Mike Magee, MD, p. 21)

... good beginnings are no guarantee of good endings. (Warren W. Wiersbe, Chapter-By-Chapter Bible Commentary, p. 166)
