Mr. Dickie at the New Carrollton Library

Browsing in a bookstore or library without wearing a watch is a concrete start. You'll open yourself up to books that will affirm your life and this, in the grand design of life, will make the lives of others better.

Books Read in 2017

  • I read nine books in 2017. I posted them to my LibraryThing account.
  • Today I learned there was a LibraryThing widget that I could use with my Google Blog.
  • Here's how that looks.
  • To learn more about a book and read my review, if there is one, click on a book image.

Reading Books

It is better not to read any books than to read many and believe them all. You can be a clever man without a single book, but if you believe all that is written in books, you can quickly become a fool.

Books

"A whole world will envelop you, the happiness, the abundance, the inconceivable vastness of a world. Live for a while in these books, learn from them what you feel is worth learning, but most of all love them. This love will be returned to you a thousand upon thousand times, whatever your life may become."

Connecting with People

Choosing not to connect with people before we know anything about them is like deciding against a book before reading even one page. In life, as with literature, then, let the adventure begin!

Books

While a book sits in my study or on your lap, it is.  But when we open it up and read it, something happens.

Substance

As we age, our ideas, formerly light, rambling, and unrelated to each other, become more densely gathered into values and a philosophy giving our lives substance and firmness.

Yesterday the three of us were out for a while enjoying the day.  We went to the Fall Bazaar and Auction at the Greenbelt Community Church in Greenbelt, MD for the bake sale and bazaar. Melva's friend, Laura, had three tables set up along one wall. Melva donated several items for the sale. We've been going to this sale for many years.  The church is on Crescent Drive and it is easy to get there by entering Greenbelt from Kenilworth Avenue.

We also attended the bazaar at the Patuxent Research Refuge National Wildlife Visitor Center near Laurel, MD.  The Center was completed in 1994. Melva and I had been there before, but not since the building was erected. We decided not to take the tram ride because it was too chilly.  We did walk out to the lake at the end of our visit.  One of the retired ladies encouraged me to consider doing volunteer work. There were quilts on display from the Southern Comforters of Bowie, MD.

Everyone bought something at the two bazaars.  Cyndi got a green cameo broach set in sterling silver and she won a matted sunset photo door prize at Wildlife Visitor Center.  Melva bought a pair of pants and baked goods.  I bought a book, "1001 Ways to Live in the Moment," by Chronicle Books to go with their book, "1001 Ways To Relax," that I bought in January 2011.

The Bookshop

The Bookshop has a thousand books,
All colors, hues, and tinges.

Reading Is Fundamental

... the possibility of making damned fools of ourselves would appear to be limitless.
(Frederick Buechner, Listening To Your Life, 15 September)

Every one of us has the responsibility to help those in need, no matter our age or the circumstances of our lives. People are counting on us. Let's do the best we can as often as we can. (The Christophers, Three Minutes A Day, Vol. 41, 26 December)

Yesterday I was able to start my 2014 reading in all of the books I selected to read each day.  Now I must resolve to set aside enough time each day to follow my plan to read the entire stack of books during the year. Do you have a plan to turn off the television for a while each day in order to find time for reading some books on your reading list?

It's Me Again

Photo at the 2013 orchid show by Richard E. Henthorn

I haven't posted anything to this blog since August 2013.  I stopped doing my daily reading.  That was the source of many of the items I posted.

On Saturday the 26th of October the three of us went to a church Bake and White Elephant sale in Bowie.  Afterwards we stopped at several yard sales.  At one there were some very nice books priced at 50 cents for hard backs and 25 cents for paperbacks.  I only bought four and then when I got home regretted that I didn't buy some to give away at The Little Free Libraries.

Little Free Library

Little Free Library and Bookcrossing

This weekend we discovered two Little Free Library locations within a couple of blocks of each other in downtown Hyattsville, MD.  One is located in Centennial Park and the other in King Memorial Park. On 24 Sep 2012 I returned with four of my Bookcrossing books.

Later in the evening I discovered that there is a third location in Berwyn Heights, MD.  All three Little Free Library locations are about four miles from the house.

It's my own idea to release some of my Bookcrossing books at these locations.  I didn't see any evidence on the Little Free Library website that the two programs should work together.

BookCrossing

There is no rule that says I have to be and think and act the same way my whole life. Today is a clean slate. I can be who I want to be. (Karen Casey, Keepers Of The Wisdom, 11 February)

******
I signed up for the book sharing application, BookCrossing.  I went to Staples to buy a packet of Avery 2"x4" labels, ten to a sheet, that I can use to print the labels I'll be attaching to the books I'm going to release.

Here are links to some of the BookCrossing videos I watched on YouTube.

Strathmore

Do all the good you can, and make as little fuss about it as possible. (Charles Dickens in The Little Book of Virtues, 4 February)

******

Yesterday we picked Cyndi up after work. During the afternoon she was at a meeting in Frederick, MD. After the meeting she got on the Red Line of the subway at Shady Grove station and rode the train for four stops to the Grosvenor-Strathmore station which is just outside of the Beltway. We met her in the Kiss and Ride area. We used our cellphones to talk to each other after she got off the train. This was the first time any of us had been to this station. I'm interested in this station because the relatively new Strathmore auditorium is across the street. I think I would like to get tickets to attend a musical presentation there. I believe it would be easy to take the Red and Orange subway lines to the event.

Books were on sale for half-price yesterday at the thrift store. I bought three: Black Pearls by Eric V. Copage; The Little Book of Virtues and Wisdom of the Ages by Dr. Wayne Dyer. I have a hunch that I'll find some good quotations in all of them.

Blogging

This year is a book of clean blank pages on which I will write a record of my experiences and my growth. (One Day At A Time in Al-Anon, 1 January)

******

One of the books I'm going to read this year is "Daily Guideposts - 2009." This is the 33rd edition of this Christian daily devotional classic. I own, and have read, all previous editions. I read three editions in 2010. All of my copies were purchased "used." I collected them over a period of years. I've started to look for the 2010 edition. I expect to find a "used" copy before too long.

I conducted a review of my blogging activities in 2010. I have four Google blogs. Two are used for sharing genealogy information and two are used for daily postings. Here's a recap (The first number is 2010 posts and the second is the number of posts since I started the blog.)
  • Arrow Prayers (6 years) - 324/1725
  • Mr. Dickie's Blog (3 years) - 326/900
  • Henthorn Genealogy (3 years) - 302/635
  • Henthorn Obituaries (3 years) - 81/255
  • Total Posts - 1033/3515

Books and Reading

I quote others in order to better express my own self. (Montaigne in The Book of Choices by Mike Magee, Introduction page)

******

For a number of years I've pursued an annual reading program. The idea is to select a stack of books I want to read at the beginning of the year and then read a page each day from all of the books in the stack. This works particularly well when the books selected are designed for daily devotional or spiritual reading. All books with 365 pages are finished on the same day, December 31st. Shorter books are finished at various times during the year.

In 2010 I used a free program, CSVEd, to maintain a file of the books I planned to read and to record the completion date for each one. I'm going to use the same program again in 2011. Here's a list of the nineteen books, including a few carry-overs, I selected to read, output from the program.
  • Andrews, Andy - The Noticer
  • Anonymous - One Day At A Time In Al-Anon
  • Barclay, William - The Letters to the Galatians and Ephesians
  • Case, Steve - Everything Counts
  • Graham, Billy - Hope For Each Day
  • Hughes, Selwyn & Thomas Kinkade - Every Day Light
  • Larsen, Earnie & Carol Hegarty - Believing In Myself
  • Magee, Mike - A Book of Choices
  • Rice, Helen Steiner - From The Heart
  • Rice, Helen Steiner - A Collection of Blessings
  • Schucman, Helen and William Thetford - A Course in Miracles
  • Thoreau, Henry David - Walden
  • Tolle, Eckhart A New Earth - Awakening to Your Life's Purpose
  • Tolstoy, Leo - The Gospel In Brief
  • Various Authors - The Upper Room Disciplines - 2003
  • Various Authors - The Upper Room Disciplines - 2008
  • Various Authors - Daily Guideposts - 2009
  • Wiersbe, Warren W. - Chapter-By-Chapter Bible Commentary
I'm using the weRead application, in conjunction with Facebook, to record all of the books I've read over a period of years as well as the books I plan to read this year. When I post information about a book to weRead I can also have the information posted to my Facebook Wall.

I encourage all friends and relatives to spend some of your spare time this year exploring the wonderful experience of reading books.

Tomorrow

(Photo: Mr. Dickie - Smithsonian Postal Museum, Washington, DC, 30 Dec 2010)

Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. (Matthew 6:34 (RSV) in Daily Guideposts -1990, 29 December)

******

This morning I finished reading twelve books that I have been reading since the first of January. I read one page a day from each book. Three of the books were Daily Guidepost books. With the completion of these three I have read every Daily Guideposts book published except for the 2009 and 2010 volumes. I own a copy of the 2009 volume which I intend to read in 2011. I'll be on the lookout for a used copy of the 2010 volume. On my computer I maintained a little file (CSV format) of the books I was reading in 2010. I'll be posting the "date completed" to this file later on. I'll also be posting to my online weRead account that I finished these books. I already created a new reading list file on the computer for 2011 but I didn't post the titles to weRead yet.

Yesterday Cyndi and I took the Green and Red subway lines to Union Station. We went across the street to visit the Smithsonian Postal Museum for the first time. I purchased a sheet of twenty stamps, the Gulf Coast Lighthouses. I took quite a few photos. When I got home I used the camera to alter some of the pictures. I ended up with twenty-eight photos. Some are good and some not so good.

After we left the museum we walked up North Capitol Street for a block to the Government Printing Office. Cyndi went inside and asked them to contact our friend Keith O. who is on the police force. He came downstairs to meet us and then went with us to the food court at Union Station where we visited while Cyndi and I ate our lunch.
