Gratitude

Melva with some tomatoes from our backyard.

I am very grateful to be exactly where I am today. I do not need to be a victim of my past or controlled by circumstances.
(Ruth Fishel, Time For Joy, 5 July)

This past week I neglected blogging for several days.  I also missed a day or to of daily reading. Recently I added several books to the stack of books that I read from each day.  I'm looking forward to the challenge of reading for a few more minutes each morning.

I've been working on some genealogy projects that are time consuming.

Where Have You Been?

I've been away from blogging for a while.

I haven't posted to this blog since 22 Jun 2014.  Around that time I had a throat infection that persisted for about three weeks.  I blame that episode for my lack of interest.  Let's see if I can generate enough interest to resume blogging.

We can't run away from anything.  We must meet life head-on and adjust to it's ebb and flow.

Welcoming The New Year

This year is a book of clean blank pages on which I will write a record of my experiences and my growth through the daily following of my program. ...

I can live my life only one day at a time.

Perhaps my confusion and despair are so great that I will have to take it one hour at a time, or one minute at a time, reminding myself constantly that I have authority over no life but my own.
(One Day At A Time In Al-Anon, 1 January)

I know that constant dwelling on my troubles lessens my ability to see them clearly and make wise decisions. I will not complicate the present by reviewing the past; nor will I dread what may happen tomorrow. One way to make detachment easier is to eliminate the past and future from my thoughts.
(One Day At A Time In Al-Anon, 16 November)

2013 Reading Program

On December 31st, 2013 I completed my 2013 daily reading program when I finished 7 books.  I finished reading only fifteen of the books I selected to read this year.  I used the CSVed program to record and track my reading program. At some point during the year I stopped reading for a while. I don't remember why that happened.  Later, I resumed reading on a daily basis and attempted to catch up.  At the end of the year I was still reading several books. I'll continue to read those books in 2014 until I finish (noted with an asterisk *).

2014 Reading Program

I selected thirty books for my 2014 daily reading program.  I've read several of them before.  I'm aware that this is an ambitious goal.  I'm hopeful that my interest will be equal to the task.  New glasses, purchased in 2013, have made it possible to read without so much eye strain.  I still use a magnifying glass when the font is tiny.

Keep a journal of your reading. List the books you read and jot down notes about them -- the characters you found interesting, the images that lingered on in your mind. Copy out your favorite passages and quotations. At a later date you can use your journal to revisit favorite passages or find a passage suited to your particular mood. (1,001 Ways To Relax, Mike George, #848)

For many years I've read from one or more copies of Daily Guideposts.  I never buy a new copy. Last year I bought a large print copy of the 2012 edition.  I don't own a copy of the 2013 edition yet. Rather than order a used copy I plan to find a used copy to purchase locally to avoid paying postage.  I've read all editions of these books through 2012.

On September 1st, 2013 I purchased Volumes 41 & 44 of Three Minutes A Day by The Christophers and Night Light by Amy E. Dean and The Color of Light by Perry Tilleraas. Starting on that day I read a page each day from these books until the end of the year. I plan to continue reading these books starting on the January 1st page today. It's Me Again

Photo at the 2013 orchid show by Richard E. Henthorn

I haven't posted anything to this blog since August 2013.  I stopped doing my daily reading.  That was the source of many of the items I posted.

On Saturday the 26th of October the three of us went to a church Bake and White Elephant sale in Bowie.  Afterwards we stopped at several yard sales.  At one there were some very nice books priced at 50 cents for hard backs and 25 cents for paperbacks.  I only bought four and then when I got home regretted that I didn't buy some to give away at The Little Free Libraries.

Pay Attention

Whatever you put your attention on will grow stronger in your life. Whatever you take your attention away from will wither, disintegrate, and disappear. (Deepak Chopra, The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, p. 70)

... getting a great idea without acting on it is like inspiration with no perspiration.  Most people never make it past the inspiration phase. (Doug Sahlin and Chris Botello, YouTube For Dummies, p. 10)

Fight bravely, for habit overcomes habit. (Thomas 'A Kempis, The Imitation Of Christ, Book 1, Chapter 21, p. 52)

Life thrives on possibilities and options. (Touchstones, 10 January)

I asked my Facebook friends for comments about Costco.  I was pleased with the number of replies.  Most  wrote favorably about their shopping experiences.  Our membership in BJs will expire at the end of this month.  For a long time I have been complaining about the lack of open checkout lines.  It's my opinion that a membership store that charges $50.00 a year ought to provide people to checkout the merchandise.  Several times I've told management, "If I wanted to do checkout work I'd apply for a job."

I'm scanning a book about the WordPress blogger that I bought the other day at the library bookstore.  It's very similar to the Google Blogger.  I'm thinking about trying it out.  I could use it to create a private journal that I would use for making some notes when I'm at the computer.

Google offers several new blogging formats.  I took a look at some of them.  They are quite nice.  At first glance it looks like the new formats don't offer some of the options I'm currently using for the sidebar.  For the time being I think I'll stick with what's work for me.  I might try it out if I could come up with an idea for another blog.  I already spend too much time blogging and doing Facebook.

Less and Less

The years have a way of taking our ideals away of making us satisfied with less and less, of lowering our standards, of accustoming us to defeat. (William Barclay, The Letters To Timothy, p. 245)

I hard another tooth break last night. Today, I'm trying to make an appointment with my dentist. This has happened several times in the past. I can't concentrate of anything else until I get the problem fixed.

Weekend Update

Yesterday I skipped posting to my two blogs. Today I'm posting directly. Usually I write the posts with a text editor and then upload the posts from the file folder of the editor.

I connected my camera to the laptop with a short cable this morning for the first time. That went well. Without copying the photos from the camera to the computer I was able to upload several photos to my Facebook wall. I hadn't tried this before. One of the photos was a kaleidoscope of an Iris in our backyard. The kaleidoscope was created using the photo editor installed on the camera. One of the photos was of a butterfly on a weed in our backyard. I took this photo for Melva yesterday. I used the camera editor to crop the photo before I uploaded to Facebook.

Long time genealogy friend, Darlene Bacon, is sharing some tombstone photos that she and her husband took several years ago at a cemetery in Monroe county, Ohio. The photos are available to collaborators in a Photos folder on my Box.net account. Darlene is the first person I granted Editor status to any of my Box.net folders. We are both learning as we go.

Strongest Minds

The strongest minds are also the most nimble, the most ready to change and to include new information. (Karen Casey and Martha Vanceburg, The Promise of a New Day, 20 March)

The world stands aside to let anyone pass who knows where he is going. (David Starr Jordan in The Book Of Choices by Mike Magee, M.D., p. 123)

I ran into a problem installing my first webpage on the RootsWeb website. I don't understand how their wrap-around HTML code impacts my code. Apparently they take over the background color and in my case there's a white box at the top of the page that I didn't specify. I have a lot more to learn. I did create a folder called "htmlold" on the website to store a copy of the homepage in case I need to "back out" my page. I was able to to fix the missing image problem on the Introduction page. There was a one character error in the file name.

I didn't post to either blog yesterday. I had other things on my mind, one of which was bagging up yard debris in the backyard.

Blogging

This year is a book of clean blank pages on which I will write a record of my experiences and my growth. (One Day At A Time in Al-Anon, 1 January)

******

One of the books I'm going to read this year is "Daily Guideposts - 2009." This is the 33rd edition of this Christian daily devotional classic. I own, and have read, all previous editions. I read three editions in 2010. All of my copies were purchased "used." I collected them over a period of years. I've started to look for the 2010 edition. I expect to find a "used" copy before too long.

I conducted a review of my blogging activities in 2010. I have four Google blogs. Two are used for sharing genealogy information and two are used for daily postings. Here's a recap (The first number is 2010 posts and the second is the number of posts since I started the blog.)
  • Arrow Prayers (6 years) - 324/1725
  • Mr. Dickie's Blog (3 years) - 326/900
  • Henthorn Genealogy (3 years) - 302/635

I didn't post to either blog yesterday. I was busy at a long appointment with my doctor in the morning and a couple hours being a taxi for Cyndi while she took care of car title business at the MVA in the afternoon.

On the evening of October 13th I watched a very nice program on PBS MPT2 - When Worlds Collide, hosted by Ruben Martinez. The program dealt with the Spanish conquest of The Americas and the mining of the gold and silver belonging to the conquered native Americans. I highly recommend watching this show.

This weekend I enjoyed phone calls with: classmate Thad, cousin Fran and genealogy friend Doug. The calls reminded me that it takes some effort to stay in touch.

I posted an article I wrote about Box.Net on my Google genealogy blog. I granted access to my genealogy reports to several friends who hold similar interests. I also posted the URL for the genealogy site created by Doug.

I watched all, or part, of many of the games in the Little League World Series. Japan beat Hawaii in the final yesterday.

Some Progress

Other people are going to be exactly the way they are, independent of your opinion. (Dr. Wayne W. Dyer, Staying On The Path, p. 122)

******

Yesterday I walked for forty minutes in the neighborhood. I learned that one house on The Court sold and another rented. That's certainly a good sign.

I figured out how to access the Facebook phonebook and how to install the "Share" buttons on my Google blogs. It's frustrating and challenging when I can't find enough information to make something work.

Have A Plan

It is intelligent to have a plan, but neurotic to fall in love with it. (Dr. Wayne W. Dyer, Staying On The Path, p. 120)

******

I took a short walk yesterday. On one street there are at least four cars without tags sitting in driveways. One is in a bag. Just around the corner there is another house with three untagged cars sitting beside the house. A couple of houses down the street there is a pickup truck full of junk parked on the street. This truck has valid tags, but it is never driven. If you live in a county that stays on top of this kind of situation, give thanks.

The Obama administration was embarrassed by over-reacting to some video clips of a speech made some time ago. The African-American lady who made the speech appeared to be racist because the clips were shown out of context. In a blatant case of "reverse racism" the White House demanded that the Secretary of Agriculture ask her to resign. He got in a hurry and forced her to resign without allowing her an opportunity to defend herself. Later, when the entire speech was aired and the lady was interviewed it became apparent that the administration had over reacted, turning a molehill into a mountain. In a way it is comical that the first black president is demanding black people to resign from their jobs.

Melva and members of her quilting class are getting together for lunch today. They chose Thursday because Melva doesn't work on that day anymore.

On the 19th I made the 600th posting to my Henthorn Genealogy News blog. I wonder how often someone finds all of those pages. It's somewhat difficult to avoid posting the same information twice. I try to discipline myself to take the time to check what's already posted. My memory isn't good enough to allow me to recall what's already available. It's wonderful that Google provides this free space where I can share the information I've accumulated over the years. I like being able to quickly and easily post information I want to share. Much of what I post probably isn't available anywhere else.

I bought three HP thumb drives on sale at Staples. I don't think my old computer will recognize them. Bummer!

This morning I finished reading "Staying On The Path," by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer. Each page of the book has from one to three quotations from the speeches and writings of Dr. Dyer. You can open the book at random to any page and find at least one thought provoking item. I enjoyed reading the book. It was fifty-cents, well spent.

Something To Say

... we will be ... penalized if we presume in ourselves a perfection that simply is not there. (As Bill Sees It, p. 159)

******

Yesterday I discovered that I can back up my Google blogs by exporting them to an XML file on my computer. Of course, I don't know anything about XML files. Apparently the main reason for doing the export is to get a copy of the blog when you want to move your blog from one place to another. I learned that I can read the downloaded file with Internet Explorer. To get started I backed up my Obituary file.

There have been several back-to-back days of temperatures in the nineties. It's so hot some of the weeds are burning up. Yesterday, for the first time this year, Melva hooked up a sprinkler to the backyard hose and we watered three different spots for twenty-five minutes each.

Today Cyndi returns from a sixteen day trip to Panama. This morning she called her mother several times from the airport in Panama. She will change planes in Miami and arrive at Washington National around 3:30 p.m. if all goes well.

Montgomery County, Maryland, where Cyndi lives, is just to the west of our county. They always brag about it being populated by affluent folks. Now one of the county leaders has announced that they have run out of money. They can no longer rent portable toilets for use in the parks. This reminds me of the old expression, "We were so poor, we didn't have a pot to pee in." This leader has suggested that citizens sign up to sponsor one or more porta-pottys. She stated that you can have a memorial plaque attached to the potty you sponsor. What would you like your plaque to say? I thought up a slogan for the sponsorship campaign, "Sponsor a Loo for a Poo."

Wages are down, jobs are lacking. In the Washington, DC area many people travel long distances on the busses and subway of the Metro system to get to and from low paying jobs if they have them. Starting today huge fare increases go into effect. Isn't this asking folks who most need public transportation to shoulder the burden of keeping this mismanaged and money loosing system running? Go figure!

We used the gas discount offer from Giant grocery and Shell Oil for the first time yesterday. After spending $200.00 at Giant we had 200 points. This could be used to get a 20 cents per gallon discount on a one-time gas purchase. I filled the Toyota Camry with $35.00 worth of gas and received a discount of $2.63. No wonder all eight pumps at the station were occupied. I wasn't too surprised when I wasn't able to make the system work at the pump. I went inside and the clerk didn't have any trouble helping me.
