Responsibility

U.S. Postal Museum - photo by Mr. Dickie

Every one of us has the responsibility to help those in need, no matter our age or the circumstances of our lives. People are counting on us. Let's do the best we can as often as we can.

Abundance

Act as if you already have everything you need and your life will be filled with abundance in more ways than you ever imagined.

What Do You Want

Do not ask for more than you need, for things that mainly prop up your self-importance.  Ask God to help you never yield to excess.
(after Thomas 'a Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book 3, Chapter 26)

*****
We ordered a new washing machine for delivery on Thursday. Yesterday I worked on the project to disconnect the hoses and clean under the old machine.  That didn't go well.  The hoses are frozen to the two cutoff valves over the laundry sink. I got discouraged and walked off after I loosened one of the hoses from the back of the machine but I didn't take the hose off.  Bad idea.  Later, when I returned to the basement there was water on the floor making a wet mess of the debris under the machine. After I disconnected both hoses and cleaned floor I discovered that both hoses, still connected to the cutoff faucets, were leaking.  Silly me, when I had a plumber here to replace the laundry sink faucet I should have replaced the cutoff valves.

This morning I cleaned up the mess on the floor. Life goes on, I have the plumber coming tomorrow morning to install the new valves.  We are on schedule to resume doing laundry sometime Thursday.

Unhealthy Needs

Unhealthy Needs

The need to:
  • be always right
  • be first in everything
  • be constantly in control
  • be perfect
  • be loved by everyone
  • to possess
  • be free of conflict and frustration
  • to change others
  • to manipulate

Make A Difference

In the face of great need, there is usually some way each of us can make a difference.

Wealth

You should strive for a union between your purpose in life and the purposes of the Divine Principle directing the universe. (Twenty-Four Hours A Day, 1 August)

If Christians would follow the law, there would be no rich and no poor. (Leo Tolstoy, A Calendar Of Wisdom, 31 July)

We have created a way of life which is contrary to mankind's moral and physical nature, and yet we want to be free while living this kind of life. (Leo Tolstoy, A Calendar Of Wisdom, 1 August)

A rich person can be insensitive and completely indifferent to the woes of others. (The Talmud, Leo Tolstoy, A Calendar Of Wisdom, 31 July)

A person must completely close his eyes on his morals, that in a Christian society so filled with people in need, there are other people who are so proud to have great wealth. (Leo Tolstoy, A Calendar Of Wisdom, 31 July)

Wealth reminds me of manure in the field. When it is in a big pile it makes a bad smell.  But when it is distributed everywhere across the field, it makes the soil fertile. (Leo Tolstoy, A Calendar Of Wisdom, 31 July)

The Needs of the People

The role of the collective or community of people is determined by the needs of the people. (Mike Magee, M.D., The Book Of Choices, p. 148)

We must work for the betterment of ourselves and other people. (Twenty-Four Hours A Day, 29 December)

New opinions are always suspected, and usually opposed, without any other reasons but because they are not already common. (John Locke in The Book Of Choices by Mike Magee, M.D., p. 75)

Malice poisons us to the point that our ears hear nothing good and our eyes see nothing good, no matter what ... [a] person may say and do. (Warren W. Wiersbe, Chapter-By-Chapter Bible Commentary, p. 233)

I am not so much concerned with the right of everyone to say anything he pleases as I am about our need as a self-governing people to hear everything relevant. (John F. Kennedy in The Book of Choices by Mike Magee, M.D., p. 98)

Elders have a long history, and they ... [have] a place in the life of almost every community. (William Barclay, The Letters to Timothy, Titus and Philemon, p. 81)

"Want" and a "Need"

Do you understand the difference between a "want" and a "need?" Do you really "need" what you "want?" Do you really "want" what you "need?" (Mr. Dickie, 19 Jan 2010)

******

I skipped blog posting yesterday while we dealt with about five inches of snow on the driveway and sidewalk. The snow continued to fall afterwards. This morning I went out to remove another inch. Melva didn't have any trouble getting out to the street and the street was clean down to the pavement. When she arrived at work it was difficult to walk from the car to the shop. As always after a snowy day we hope that it will be worth the effort of getting to work.

As of tomorrow we will have used one twelfth of the time we have to accomplish our 2010 goals. Isn't that a sobering thought?
