Anxiety

Anxiety

Anxiety splits our energy between today's priorities and tomorrow's problems.
Part of our mind is on the now; the rest is on the not yet.
The result is half-minded living.

Limitations

When we accept our limitations and know that things will go wrong -- and we cannot always prevent it -- we are more able to cope with problems when they arise.

Respect

Work with respect for your associates, for their opinions, for their beliefs, with appreciation for their problems, and with a desire to help them should they stumble.

Lack

There seems to be no lack of discontent and problems for many of the people of the world. Could this be attributed to our willingness to accept lack as the way it has to be for a significant percentage of the worlds' population?

Why do we expect so many to be content with a lack of:

  • education
  • good jobs
  • a living wage
  • affordable housing
  • healthy diets
  • clean water
  • health insurance
  • affordable medical health care?

Reality

Dick and Melva in Annapolis, MD

Mature people think about the reality of their problems.

We all need wake up calls to get us serious about changing.
(Cloud & Townsend, God Will Make A Way, p. 259)

The contented, well-adjusted, person has no need to look for flaws in others.

Detachment

Tomatoes and Coneflowers in  our backyard

Learning to detach will help us to see that many of our problems stem from minding everyone's business but our own.

Inventory

How optimistic are you?
Do you see problems as solvable or impossible?
Do you see your abilities as expanding or limited?
Do you set goals for yourself, or do you feel goals are unattainable?
(After, Amy E. Dean, Night Light, 2 November)

A deeply rooted habit of self-justification may tempt us to explain away each fault as we uncover it.
I must go on day after day trying to face myself as I am, and to correct whatever is keeping me from growing into the person I want to be.

Precious Gift

What am I doing with this precious ability to recall what happened in the past? If I use it to remember enjoyments and interesting experiences, it will give me a saving perspective on the problems I am encountering in the here and now. I can also use the gift of memory for storing up today's blessings to tide me over future woes.

Happy People

The happiest people in the world are not those who have no problems, but the people who have learned to live with those things that are less than perfect.

The Valley of Other People's Problems

The Valley of Other People's Problems
  • Other people's problems,
  • other people's priorities,
  • other people's principles,
  • other people's people,
can get in our way, hold us back and take us off track until we develop the strength to be honest with ourselves.

Rise Above

Blackwater Falls, WV

In this world so filled with problems, so constantly threatened by dark and evil challenges, you can, and must, rise above mediocrity, above indifference. You can become involved and speak with a strong voice for that which is right.

It's Not My Problem

Face facts: the upcoming day will not be problem-free. In fact, your life can be viewed as an exercise in problem-solving. The question is not whether you will encounter problems; the real question is how you will choose to address them.

Complacency

Complacency ... is rarely listed among the major human faults, yet it can hinder us in every form of personal growth.
(Hope For Today, 15 February)

If great care is not taken to deal with problems, they can soon throw a monkey wrench into the smooth machinery ... [of life].

Whose Fault Is It?

We blame little things in others and pass over great things in ourselves, we are quick enough perceiving and weighing what we suffer from others, but we mind not what others suffer from us.
(Thomas 'a Kempis in One Day At A Time In Al-Anon, 9 May)

Instead of complaining about our struggles, we should see them as opportunities for growth. Thank God for promising to be with you in rough times. Ask Him to help you solve your problems or to give you the strength to endure them. Then be patient. God will stay close and help you grow.

There's A Problem

[When other people tell you about their problems, remember:]

  1. It's not your issue.
  2. Don't get stuck in other people's stuff.
  3. When people get tired of suffering and struggling they stop.

Winner

A one-hundred-percent-of-the-time winner is one who elects to work at not becoming depressed, traumatized, angry, guilty, unnecessarily fearful, self-rejecting or anxious as a reaction to problems and life experiences.

Difficult People

[Difficult people] ... think you don't understand them, and that may be one thing they're right about. But they don't understand either - not you, and not themselves. ... Once you've engaged in the dance with them, you've become a part of their problems.

Get Out From Under

A good way to get out from under some of our daily problems is to stop reacting to everything that occurs.  Some of us have a constant drive to do something about everything that happens, everything that someone says to us.

Just For Today

Just for today I will live through this one day only and not tackle all my problems at once.
Those of the past need not concern me today; future ones can be faced as they arrive.

Dating

... the less [time one spends in addressing] ... problems in a dating relationship, the less likely these problems will be easy to deal with in marriage...

Photo: Mr. Dickie

... if you are in a dating relationship where you do not confront issues as they arise, you set yourself up for heartache later. ... [How someone] responds to confrontation helps you diagnose what kind of person he[/she] is. (Cloud & Townsend, Boundaries Face To Face, p. 204-205) 9 July 2013
