Expectations

Washington, DC Orchid Show

Most of our troubles come from expectations that are unrealistic and cannot be fulfilled.

Attitude

Most of us bring to everyday life a somewhat naive psychological attitude in our expectations that our lives and relationships will be simple.

No One

If you are looking for no one to support you, I can guarantee you that the universe will present you with experience mirroring your low expectations [and no one will show up].

Home

There is no better training ground for forgiveness than in the home. The importance of our relationship, the constancy of it, the intimacy and vulnerability all work together to make it likely we'll often fail to live up to each other's expectations.

Be Content

Melva's quilt backing - photo by Mr. Dickie

Be content with little; be happy with what is simple; and do not grumble if things seem to take a different turn from what you expected.

Do Your Best

Doing our best involves the following factors:

  • giving our genuine attention to the task
  • getting input from others on how to do the job
  • asking God for insight
  • following through on what we agreed to do
  • managing our expectations of how well a project turns out

Reading And Writing Program

I follow my daily reading and writing program for instruction and emotional support I cannot find elsewhere.  I know I need not accept everything I read, but  the thinking process it engenders will set me on the right path. (after One Day At A Time In Al-Anon, 6 April)

Do you understand what you are reading? ... How can you, unless someone guides you? (The Upper Room Disciplines - 2003, 14 May)

There are things in the world I want to change, and I'm going to work on them.  Those things I can't change, and which I dislike, I will stop expecting to be different, since my expectations will always end up being disconfirmed, and therefore upset me. (Dr. Wayne W. Dyer, Pulling Your Own Strings, p. 186)

Consider what you'd like to do, and then let God decide how and if it needs to be done. (Karen Casey, Keepers Of The Wisdom, 29 March)

Expectations

... expecting the world to treat you fairly because you ...
[are] a good person ...
[is] like expecting ... [a] bull not to charge you because you ...
[are] a vegetarian.

Expectations

Do I practice what I profess?  Do I tell others what is right but then do what is wrong?  Do I expect more of others than I do of myself?  (Warren W. Wiersbe, Chapter-By-Chapter Bible Commentary, p. 731)
