Detachment

April 2017
Backyard Azalea

I will not interfere with the working out of another's difficulties, however dear and close we may be to each other. Detachment is essential to any healthy relationship between people.

Detachment

Detachment allows you to remain aware of what you feel while the events of your life unfold.

Attachments

The soul is inclined toward the past rather that the future, toward attachment to people, places, and events rather than detachment, and so it is not quick to move on. In outer life, we may leave a person or a place, but in memory and dream the soul clings to those former attachments.

Detachment

Learning to detach will help us to see that many of our problems stem from minding everyone's business but our own.

Detachment

Detachment is the difference between emotional involvement and emotional awareness. Detachment allows you to see your emotions as they form, develop, intensify, and change.

Detachment

Detaching doesn't mean we cut people out. It means we stay present and loving without thinking we have to fix or manage the people around us. It means we stop trying to save people from the consequences of their behavior. Best of all, when we detach, we stop taking ourselves so seriously and start having more fun.

Troubles

I know that constant dwelling on my troubles lessens my ability to see them clearly and make wise decisions. I will not complicate the present by reviewing the past; nor will I dread what may happen tomorrow. One way to make detachment easier is to eliminate the past and future from my thoughts.
He who frees himself of hampering regrets for the past and worry about what lies ahead finds himself able to deal with the present.

Detachment

  • Let me not take to myself, and suffer over, the actions and reactions of other people.
  • Other adult human beings are not my responsibility, no matter how closely their lives may be intertwined with mine.
  • I will not allow myself to be troubled by anyone else; my one problem is to improve my own way of living and looking at life.

God teach me to detach my mind from what others say and do, except to draw helpful lessons and guidance from them.

(From One Day At A Time in Al-Anon found in The Color Of Light by Perry Tilleraas, 6 December)

This is a principle that I should always keep in mind.

Detachment

Detaching doesn't mean we don't care. It means we learn to love, care, and be involved without going crazy.

Detachment

  • I will not permit myself to become emotionally involved in matters that should not be my concern.
  • I will not interfere with the working out of another's difficulties, however dear and close we may be to each other.
  • Detachment is essential to any healthy relationship between people.
  • Each of us is a free individual, with neither one in control of the other.

Present Possibilities

... life has a bitter side, and you have to be prepared to deal with it. (Thomas Moore, Dark Nights Of The Soul, p. 75)

... how do the people who are often undervalued by society find the hope, direction and encouragement they need to fulfill their God-given destinies? (John C. Maxwell, Leadership, 26 January)

The perfectionist, clinging stubbornly to ideas of what life ought to be, often has difficulty grasping the concepts of acceptance and detachment. (after One Day At A Time In Al-Anon, 23 December)

I will examine my own attitudes and activities and face the fact that much of what I do or leave undone - contributes to my distress. (One Day At A Time In Al-Anon, 4 February)

Many people procrastinate making life changes because of fears of disapproval from others. (Doreen Virtue, Ph.D., I'd Change My Life If I Had More Time, p. 77)

Look for fears and limiting beliefs as you'd seek weeds in a garden. Observe them, and then yank them out by the roots! (Doreen Virtue, Ph.D., I'd Change My Life If I Had More Time, p. 80-1)

... honor people and their process even when it looks dysfunctional by your standards. ... Rather than allowing indifference to close your heart and mind to situations and people, learn how to be detached. In this way you will be available to offer what you can, when you can. (Iyanla Vanzant, Until Today! 16 December)

... focus on present possibilities, and be content with today. ( A Gentle Spirit, 19 December)

This morning I inadvertently altered the appearance of my Chrome browser's bookmark bar. At first I was upset. After thinking about what happened for a few minutes I came up with a "fix" that will probably prove better. I created a folder that I labeled, Access which will thus be the left-most (first) folder to appear on the Bookmarks bar. In the Access folder I stored the links to the pages I frequently access like:

  • Arrow Prayers

Detachment

Seek to detach your mind and your emotions from minute-by-minute conflicts, seeking a peaceful, orderly way of life within yourself. (after One Day At A Time In Al-Anon, 23 September) 7 October 2012

Detachment

Self-importance is our greatest enemy.  Think about it - what weakens us is feeling offended by the deeds and misdeeds of our fellowmen.  Our self-importance requires that we spend most of our lives offended by someone. (Carlos Castenada, in Touchstones, 4 February)

If you trust in appearances, you will quickly be deceived; if you look for comfort and gain in others, you will often be disappointed. (Thomas 'A Kempis, The Imitation Of Christ, Book 2, Chapter 7, p. 71)

You will not depend on someone once they have let you down. (Iyanla Vanzant, Until Today! 19 February)

I will not permit myself to become emotionally involved in matters that should not be my concern.  I will not interfere with the working out of another's difficulties, however dear and close we may be to each other.  Detachment is essential to any healthy relationship between people.  Each of us is a free individual, with neither one in control of the other. (One Day At A Time In Al-Anon, 23 February)

Trying to analyze why another person persists in destructive behavior cannot help me out of my own difficulties.  I can overcome them only by turning my thoughts inward, to face my own mistakes and to learn how to improve myself. ... My problem is "me." ... I will not waste time and energy trying ... [to figure out other people.]  I will concentrate on figuring out why I do what I do. (One Day At A Time In Al-Anon, 27 February)

It is not self-loving, nor is it loving to others involved, to allow yourself to be mentally, emotionally, or physically abused in hope that things can, or will, get better. (Iyanla Vanzant, Until Today! 8 February)

The simplest and usually the most reasonable way to deal with grumpy people who are not willing to change is to stay away from them. (Dr. Wayne W. Dyer, Pulling Your Own Strings, p. 110)

My program teaches this about fault finding.  When you think it's not your fault, it probably is. (Richard E. Henthorn, 25 January 2012)

Detachment

Without detachment we are prisoners of

  • helplessness,
  • hopelessness,
  • mundane needs,
  • trivial concerns,
  • quiet desperation, and
  • seriousness --

the distinctive features of everyday mediocre existence and poverty consciousness. (Deepak Chopra, The Seven Spiritual Laws Of Success, p. 85) 12 February 2012

Detachment

Detachment is one of life's great lessons for those on the path of enlightenment. (Dr. Wayne Dyer, Staying On The Path, p. 175)

Yesterday I backed up a copy of the RootsMagic Conger file on my hard drive and a copy of the GEDCOM that created the RootsMagic file to a Zip disk. I'm still finding "notes" that need the word wrap edits. One way to spot them is to create a modified register report and then visually examine the report. I'm now into the second month of my GEDCOM edit project. I'm hopeful that I will be able to sustain my interest in the project until it's complete. At this point I could share information if someone makes a request.
