askSam

If we eradicated ourselves with the lethal means at our disposal, we wouldn't be the first species to disappear. But wouldn't it be a shame? We humans have the capacity for transcendence as well as destruction. Surely we're adaptable enough to guide our own development away from our current preoccupation with deadly toys. (The Promise of a New Day, 21 March)

[Comment: This is an interesting observation in light of the fact that currently there is a two-day conference on nuclear disarmament going on in Washington, DC. When some terrorist nut gets his hands on one of the thousands of weapons now in existence and makes use of it, the world will finally have a wake-up call. Mr. Dickie]

One of the few, rather expensive programs, I purchased is, askSam - The Information Manager for Windows. I'll admit I never made as much use of the program as I should have. Apparently I never installed the program on the desktop computer I'm using now. I mostly used the program on one of my laptop computers. At some point I copied the program and all of the files onto a Zip disc. I can't remember whether I checked to see if the program would run from the Zip disc. It turns out it would work without reinstallation. Yesterday I copied the program and all of the files to the desktop computer and created a shortcut icon on the screen so I can quickly start it. I located the two manuals on the bookcase in the room where I have the computer. Last night I read through the Getting Started manual and checked the chapter about Importing and Exporting in the other manual. I found a floppy disc with three DBF files of address information. For a "getting reacquainted test" I created an askSam file and loaded the three files into it. This worked without a hitch. It's my intention to resume using the program. I'll create a file that I can use like Post-It notes. The beauty of askSam is that it indexes every word.

There's More Than Television

Few people take responsibility for their own actions; they prefer to blame someone or something else. (The One Year Mini For Men, 6 April)

Last night I decided to keep my hands off the remote. Instead I put on the headset to listen to some music while reading a few more pages of "Walden." One of my favorite singers is Tony Rice. It's wonderful that he made so many good albums before his voice gave out. I enjoyed listening to twenty-three tracks from the albums, "Cold on the Shoulder" and "Me & My Guitar." It was great to hear those songs again after months of not playing either album.

Be careful if you are considering joining the National Wildlife Federation. I made the mistake of providing them with my phone number and my Email address in addition to my mailing address. Silly me, I should have known better. Within less than a week they started to send me Email messages. I was very surprised when they had someone call me to ask for more money. My recommendation is, "Think twice before joining, unless you are willing to deal with the aggravation."

There's No Comparison

Don't compare yourself to others; they are just as fouled up as you are. (After Max Lucado, Grace For The Moment, 24 March)

I was up at 4:30 a.m. today, catching up on my daily reading and listening to some music. The weather turned colder during the night. We had to turn the furnace back on after we got up.

Last night I recorded the show "Who Do You Think You Are?" Afterwards I was disappointed when I realized that they repeated the first episode featuring the family of actress, Sarah Jessica Parker. That was my least favorite program of those I have watched so far.

Some of the information I recently posted to my genealogy blog I never shared when I had my genealogy website on AOL. I'm hopeful that some folks with similar interests will notice the new information and enjoy it.

Hot Buttered Rum

HOT BUTTERED RUM
(Music & Lyrics by Tommy Thompson)

Recorded by : Priscilla Herdman; Laurie Lewis; Red Clay Ramblers; Voices Of Winter. Also Byran Bowers, Mary Chapin Carpenter

When chimney smoke hangs still and low across the stubbled fields of snow
And angry skies reach down and seize the sorry blackened bones of trees
In the dead of winter when the silent snowbirds come
You're my sweet maple sugar, honey, hot buttered rum

When dreary Christmas decorations line the streets and filling stations
And dime store Santas can't disguise their empty hands and empty eyes
In the dead of winter when the tinsel angels come
You're my sweet maple sugar, honey, hot buttered rum

When gloves and boots and woolen parkas bring cold comfort to the heart
And bitter memories freeze the tongue and words of love are left unsung
In the dead of winter when the cold feelings come
You're my sweet maple sugar, honey, hot buttered rum

Believe That Life Is Worth Living

Believe that life is worth living, and your belief will help create that fact. (William James in 10 Secrets For Success and Inner Peace by Dr. Wayne Dyer, p. 143)

The true measure of how your life is going is in how you function with other people. (Dr. Wayne Dyer, Real Magix, p. 133)

I got in a 45-minute walk in the neighborhood late yesterday afternoon. I listened to classical music on my headset radio while I walked. Today is trash pickup day. Along the way I stopped at one place to put three or four soaking wet freee "county" newspapers in the trash can at one of the places where we have many Latinos living. It seems to be that the anti-litter laws ought to apply to this newspaper which is just a blight on the environment.

I took a chance on a CD I noticed at the thrift store and spent eighty cents. The CD was recorded locally, in 2005, by local guitar player, Kevin Artz and is titled "One." He plays seventeen songs on his 1973 Martin D-28 guitar.

One of Melva's friends is in the flea market business. We are gathering items to give her next week. Yesterday I put some 3.5" floppies in Ziploc bags and I took books off the book shelves, all part of my clutter reduction project.

Last night Cyndi had trouble getting back to Washington from Oklahoma because of bad weather in Atlanta. For a while she thought she might have to spend the night in Atlanta. She was able to get a flight through Memphis. She arrived back at her apartment after midnight. She earned her money yesterday.

This is the 700th posting to this blog.

Anger-Sickness

The symptom of the anger-sickness is an uncontrollable impulse to judge and condemn someone else. (One Day At A Time in Al-Anon, 9 March)
