Negative Thoughts

To change negative thoughts ... we have to recognize them and experience any feelings associated with them. And then we need to change our thoughts. We need to replace our old beliefs with new affirmations ...

Growth

... growth is related directly to our success in looking at and releasing our history. Like barnacles on a ship's hull, our past wrongdoings can prevent us from sailing smoothly to a life fulfilled with peace.

Decisions

It is the little decisions that make the great differences in our lives.
(Gordon B. Hinckley, Stand A Little Taller, 20 May)

One of the most important decisions you'll ever make in your life is to let other people be responsible for their own decisions.

Stumbling Blocks or Stepping Stones

So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God. Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister.

Pick Your Battles

Pick your battles wisely.
Don't quibble over things that don't really matter.
We have enough big issues in life with which to deal.

Sit Quietly

I sit quietly and allow my thoughts to pass. I imagine that I am a calm lake. I allow disturbing thoughts to drift away like clouds across the sky. I allow comfort and peace to surround and penetrate my body.

MYOB

I will concentrate on the things that are my concern -- and make sure which are really mine. I will keep hands off the business of others. I will not interfere with ... [their] activities, assume ... [their]
responsibilities or shield ... [them] from the consequences of what ... [they do or fail to do].

Father's Day - 2014

If you are wise,
you'll allow God to guide you
today and every day of your life.
When you pray for guidance, God will give it.

Flag Day - 2014

If there are unwritten rules that don't make sense ... challenge them and see if ... [you] can change them.

Music and Art

A person should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day of their life, in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of beautiful which God has implanted in the human soul.

Shape Up

Shape up, I say to myself constantly.
Shape up.
Stand a little taller.
Be a little better,
a little stronger,
a little more thoughtful,
a little humbler,
a little more prayerful,
that you may be worthy of the guidance of the Lord
and of His wonderful blessings.

Debt

The borrower is servant to the lender.
Proverbs 22:7

Debt can be a terrible thing. It is so easy to incur and so difficult to repay. ... be wise and do not go beyond your ability to pay. Borrowed money is had only at a price, and that price can be burdensome.

No One

If you are looking for no one to support you, I can guarantee you that the universe will present you with experience mirroring your low expectations [and no one will show up].

I'm Just Sayin'

Let me reflect how much damage I may have done and may still do, by saying the first thing that comes to mind. Let me realize that the worst reaction of unbridled anger falls upon me. What I say in a single moment of uncontrolled rage can have inconceivable long-range consequences.

Whose Fault Is It?

We blame little things in others and pass over great things in ourselves, we are quick enough perceiving and weighing what we suffer from others, but we mind not what others suffer from us.
(Thomas 'a Kempis in One Day At A Time In Al-Anon, 9 May)

Instead of complaining about our struggles, we should see them as opportunities for growth. Thank God for promising to be with you in rough times. Ask Him to help you solve your problems or to give you the strength to endure them. Then be patient. God will stay close and help you grow.

Right and Wrong

We are involved in an intense battle. It is a battle between right and wrong, between truth and error, between the design of the Almighty on the one hand and that of Lucifer on the other. For that reason, we desperately need moral men and women who stand on principle, to be involved in the political process. Otherwise, we abdicate power to those whose designs are almost entirely selfish.

70th Anniversary of D-Day

Over there, over there,
Send the word, send the word over there
That the Yanks are coming, the Yanks are coming ...
We'll be over, we're coming over
And we won't come back till it's over, over there.
(1917 song by George M. Cohan 1878-1942)

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row.

Reading

Promote Reading

  • Designate a family reading time. Read anything and everything.
  • Connect reading to bedtime.
  • Let the lights stay on for a while if your children are reading in bed.
  • Take books or audio books on family drives.
  • Read to each other whatever and wherever you can, such as during a meal or while waiting.
  • Encourage children to carry a book with them to read in spare moments.
  • Don't just read, share understandings and interpretations.
  • The desire to read and the delight in doing so are among the greatest gifts you can give your children.

Dysfunctional Behavior

... realize that all dysfunctional behavior comes from an empty place that ... [someone is] desperately trying to cover up ... The dysfunctional behavior you see on the outside is a reflection of the insecurity present on the inside.

It's News To Me

Literally and metaphorically turn off any medium that broadcasts a litany of reasons to be depressed and frightened.
(Dr. Wayne W. Dyer, Excuses Begone!, p. 247)

Planning

Planning is not supposed to be a onetime marathon but an ongoing process that you do every day. Ongoing planning is essential. ... Nothing else will happen if you don't do this.
