I Have Learned

I have learned

  • silence from the talkative
  • tolerance from the intolerant and
  • kindness from the unkind.

I should not be ungrateful to those teachers.

Silence

How can we possibly think, read, meditate, or write in a journal with noise bombarding us?
To learn to sit comfortably alone in silence, we need to try it in small steps.

Silence!

Things cannot always go as you want them to.
Accept disappointment quietly;
Cultivate the gift of silence when speaking may aggravate the difficulty.

Is That All There Is?

... if this ends up to be all there is, wouldn't it be nice to enjoy it more? (Karen Casey, Keepers Of The Wisdom, 26 February)

... there is a great deal of carelessness, even with careful people, in regard to their thoughts. (Hannah Whitall Smith in A Gentle Spirit, 25 January)

I have learned

  • silence from the talkative;
  • tolerance from the intolerant and
  • kindness from the unkind.

I should not be ungrateful to those teachers.

Silence

We need silence in our lives
to think,
to work,
to create,
to rest.

Pearl Harbor Day

70th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence  As far as possible without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.  Speak your truth quietly and clearly; listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they, too, have their story.  (Desiderata by Max Erhmann of Boston, dated 1927, in One Day At A Time In Al-Anon, 7 December) 7 December 2011

Choose Life

Choose. It really is your choice. Once you make the right one. You see how obvious it is. (Steve Case, Everything Counts, 19 July)

[To] ... cultivate the gift of silence when speaking may aggravate the difficulty. (One Day At A Time in Al-Anon, 27 May) [Note: You may need to think about this one for a minute before it makes sense. It means that you shouldn't use silence as a weapon. Mr. Dickie.]

Whenever we are unwilling to face a negative emotion it implies that we are not in control of it, but that it is in control of us. (Selwyn Hughes, Every Day Light, Day 136)

Silence

"I have learned silence from the talkative; tolerance from the intolerant and kindness from the unkind. I should not be ungrateful to those teachers." (Kahlil Gibran in Sand and Foam found in One Day At A Time in Al-Anon, 27 March)

Silence sometimes is louder than speech. Know when to speak and when to be silent. (Warren W. Wiersbe, Chapter-By-Chapter Bible Commentary, p. 333)

Occasionally refrain from expressing your opinion when someone else is expressing his, and see what that feels like. (after Eckhart Tolle, A New Earth, p. 217)

What makes you think, if I ask for your opinion, that I'll listen to it? (Richard E. Henthorn, 16 March 2011)

We need a reason to speak, but none to keep silent. (Pierre Nicole in The Book Of Choices by Mike Magee, M.D., p. 101)
