Laptop Computer Problems

For a long time there was a problem with my Toshiba Satellite C655 laptop.

Once in a while the two screens would go black with a power loss.

Once, when it happened to me, I was watching streaming of the two-hour Wednesday night concert of Music City Roots from Nashville, TN. The computer shutdown during the jam at the end of the two hour show. This lead me to suspect that the computer was overheating. I purchased an external fan that I placed under the laptop. This didn't solve the problem.

Later, for some reason, I moved the power cord where it attached to the laptop on the right side. The screen went to black again. This lead me to think that there might be a break in the three or four inches of wire that was perpendicular to the laptop. I began to hope I might be able to fix the problem by replacing the part of the wire from the power supply to the computer.

I packed up the laptop and the power supply and cords and drove about 22 miles to Arundel Computers in Millersville, MD. Once at the store we started the computer using my power supply and cords. It didn't take more than a couple of minutes to make the computer screen go black. Next we tested with a "New" power supply and cords from the store. Once again moving the cord near where it was plugged into the side of the laptop caused the screen to go black.

At that point we knew that the short was inside of the computer, where the power cord plugged in.

The computer was in the shop for seven days. The repair was quite simple and quite expensive. Inside of the computer there was a short piece of wire. On one end was the socket where the power supply attached and on the other end was a four contact plug that I assume attaches to the motherboard. It was a very easy task to remove the cable from the computer and attach a new connection cable.

Cost for the part, $15.90. Cost for opening and closing the laptop and knowing how to remove and replace the piece of cable, $75.00.

Yesterday, 25 Apr 2018 I picked up the computer. I'm happy to report that this long-standing problem has been resolved and that the life of this computer has been extended.

Google Docs & Google Drive

Google Docs & Google Drive

Today I worked on a project trying to understand the relationship between Google Docs and Google Drive.

Here's the way I see it.
  • Google Docs is an application where you can create and save documents.
  • Google Drive is where files created in the various Google applications are stored.
Files stored in Google Drive count against your allocated "free" storage.

Creating folders in Google Drive can be a big help later on when you need to find a file. There are several ways to create folders and to move files into folders.

If you also use Google Sites you can create a special folder in Google Drive that will be accessible in Google Sites. That is to say, files stored in the special folder can be viewed via Google Sites in a Folder page that you create on Google Sites.

The President's Primary Problem

The President's Primary Problem

“The president's primary problem as a leader,” Peggy Noonan stingingly remarked,

is not that he is impetuous, brash or naive. It's not that he is inexperienced, crude, an outsider. It is that he is weak and sniveling. It is that he undermines himself almost daily by ignoring traditional norms and forms of American masculinity. He's not strong and self-controlled not cool and tough, not low-key and determined; he's whiny, weepy and self-pitying. He throws himself, sobbing on the body politic.

He's a drama queen.

  • Shutdown or restrict access to agency websites
  • Cut or eliminate budgets for agencies whose mission includes policing
  • Fail to bring Bills to the floor of the House or Senate
  • Force votes on Bills without allowing time to read and debate said Bills

Are They Lying?

Are They Lying?

You may remember the old joke: "How do you know if a politician is lying? If he's moving his lips." It's not that funny anymore is it? Obviously, there is no certain way to know at the moment something is said. But remember this: past performance serves to reveal future behavior. A person who has exhibited a pattern of lying is a liar. I know it sounds rough, but can you think of another way to put it? This is why character in our leadership is so important.

Microsoft One Drive

Microsoft OneDrive

I have a free account on Microsoft OneDrive. As part of my new year housekeeping I wanted to review how much storage they gave me. I had a 3x5 card with information about the account. I wanted to verify that I started with a 15Mb account and that they later added an additional  10Mb.

I couldn't find where I should click to view my storage. After stumbling around for ten or fifteen minutes I spotted the information. It's probably no surprise, to people who know me, that after I confirmed what was on the 3x5 card I still wasn't able to find my way back to the storage information to look at it a second time.

As I went through the relearning process I noticed that there was no bookmark to OneDrive visible on my computer.

I use a program called, igHome as my computer start page. At the top of the display there is a black toolbar where I can store twelve links. I was using eleven for links to: Gmail, Facebook; Box, etc. I copied the link to OneDrive and pasted it to the toolbar.

My new link takes me to the OneDrive sign-on screen.  After I enter my user name and password the link displays the first page of my OneDrive account. On the left sidebar, near the bottom of the page, is a line of text that displays how much storage I have and how much is in use.

I also noticed that there is a supposedly easy way to use OneDrive for backup. If I every knew how to do this I have forgotten. That's another possible new year project.
